Windows Live Movie Maker - Sound but no Picture!

I've got a Panasonic SD Cam Corder which saves the files as .MOD, I've been using Windows Movie Maker to change these files over to WMV files with no problems at all using Windows 7.

However since I've bought a new computer which has Windows 8 on and the Windows Live Essentials wasn't on there I've downloaded it from Microsoft, however as per normal i transfer the .MOD files over to the Movie Maker and save the film as either MP4 or Movie Maker (WMV), trouble is now there is sound but no picture!!!

Am i doing something wrong or has anyone got any suggestions as I'm completely at a loss as to what to do, even when i open it in Microsoft Media Player the same thing happens i.e. Sound but no Picture..

As I've said I've been using this software for ages with no problems until I've bought a new computer.. Grrrrr!

Anyone please help as i have loads of MOD files that need to be converted over from Christmas.

Thank you,

    Hi kenneb04,

This issue is usually caused by corrupted/missing codecs or outdated video driver. To troubleshoot the issue, please follow these steps:

    1. Ensure that you have the latest version for Windows Movie Maker. You can download the latest version here.

    2. Ensure that you have the proper codecs to play your videos and audio files.  Audio and Video require codecs to play the file and it’s important to have the right codecs installed or updated in your PC.

    ·         Try running the Microsoft Fix It tool for codecs.

    ·         Media info will be able to identify the codec required for your audio and video files, and will provide a link to the website for the required codec. You can get it here

Note*: If you can't find the codec you need you may convert the video to a supported format (eg. wmv) and then add it to your Movie Maker project.*

    3. Ensure that your video card drivers are up to date. Movie Maker makes extensive use of the video card GPU (graphics processing unit). The display driver affects the reliability, performance, and compatibility of the video card with various software.

To determine the version and video card driver date, run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool (dxdiag):

        a. Click on Start button and type dxdiag in the Search programs and files box and press Enter key on the keyboard.

        b. Click on the Display tab and you will see the driver details including the driver version.

        c. If your video card driver seems outdated please go to the video card driver manufacturer and see if a newer version is available.

    Thanks!

I'm seeing this as well after upgrading to Windows 8.  Converting the .MOD files to WVM using some freeware works around the issue, but I'd like to know how to get this working out of the box on Win8.  Was there a resolution to this issue?

    Litton_B

Thank you for your help although none of your suggestions worked :-(

Why though am i having problems now as i said previously I've used this before with no problems at all, since I've moved over to Windows 8 or got a new computer i'm now having this issue?

    Any other suggestions?

I've also tried to change the file name from (Example) MOV001.MOD to MOV001.AVI, yes they load fine but still i can hear them but can't see a picture, I've tried to save these as other file types as i have other Movie Maker files and they work fine, it's the new ones that don't and i'm stuck..

I thank you so far for your help but if you or anyone has any other suggestions please tell me..

    Thank you.
