Hi Debra,
Welcome to Microsoft community where you can find all the answers related to windows. As per the description provided it looks like you want to add a quick calendar application on the desktop.
You may use the calendar provided by Microsoft which display's date and time and is present at the bottom right corner of the screen. Once you click the time and date option a calendar will be displayed.
If you want to use a third party application you have to use your favorite search engine with a search string as "calendar application for windows xp".
Note: Using Third Party Software or the link, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Third Party Software or the link can be solved. Using Third Party Software or the link is at your own risk.
Hope this information helps. If you have further questions feel free to reply and we would be glad to assist.
I use Webshots for my calendar. It displays over whatever screenshots you are using for your desktop background. It even comes with sample screenshots. I've had it for several years and think it was free. link is: www.webshots.com
not wanting to use a third party does Microsolf or Windows have a place i can get one? i need one that shows two past years with months.
AFAIK XP doesnt have one. You'll have to install a 3rd party program
