Dell XPS 12 Touch Screen Issues

My Computer is the Dell XPS 12 Convertible with Intel Core i7-3517U processor, 8GBDual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz, 256GB Solid State Drive, and the Intel HD 4000 Video Card running on Windows 8.

First and foremost, this is the best laptop I have ever owned. I am very excited and intrigued by the technology Microsoft has implemented in its operating system, as well as Dell's design.

For the most part the touch screen works. Although, sometimes when I am using the xps in laptop mode, or even in the convertible mode, the touch screen will no longer accept my touching the screen. Even right now when in this forum, I have to use the touchpad mouse, the touch screen does not function. Even pressing the start button, alt tab, ControlAltDelete, does not fix this. If I restart the computer the screen will work fine.

Once it starts doing it, it works off & on. I was just playing Diablo 3 in convertible mode, pressed the volume button on side of laptop, and then the screen didn't respond to my touch.

My question is, how do I resolve this?

Also, the other huge bug I notice. (That is noticed by the operating system.) Is if I shut down my xps normally through windows, it's almost like it shuts down, and forgets to shut off the system fans!) So, the fans will just run down the battery.

If I restart the computer from windows, and then shut down at the log in screen, then it shuts the fans off... Another weird bug. (Should probably start another thread on this one).

I have this same problem sometimes. It also runs hot while fans are on when it should be off. My screen has been working fine since I updated my drivers.

Mine does run hot too if it shuts down and the fans stay on. I started shutting it down, and listening for the fan. If the fans stay on, I hold the switch for 5 seconds to force shutdown. It pissed me off the first time it happened. Because I shutdown computer and immediately put it in laptop bag. I pulled it out and it was HOT! Glad I checked it.

For this very reason I will probably disable the automatic startup to check your email & such by intel. Have it set for the night only, but, now I am worried the system will overheat if it is in my case. Does the fan come on when It checks mail?

Since the BIOS updates came out a couple days ago, my touch screen has worked fine as well. :-) Looks like they are working the bugs out. I will have to read the link above about Hybrid Shutdown & see what they recommend.

Unfortunately there appears to be a hardware issue with the Dell XPS 12.    I received my device on November 9th and the touchscreen had issues from day 1 and now after they sent a technician to replace the touchscreen, it doesn't work at all.  Dell is actually sending me an exchange but it's already been over 2 weeks and they still have not shipped it.   I found on the Dell forums that more and more people are experiencing this issue and none of the things they recommend permanently resolves the issue.  I spent about 12 hours on calls with Dell support as well.

You should probably try to initiate an exchange.   I loved the machine when it actually worked but this has been beyond frustrating.

If there is ever a resolution to this issue let me know. I love my system too (have the same one as you) and the touch screen randomly stops working.

I have the same problem with mine, touch screen will randomly stop working. This morning it was working in a fashion, responding very slowly, so that it would appear to be frozen, then about 30 sec later would suddenly jump through responses to the previous attempts at touch.

However I have seen on another forum references to the new vaio having similar problems, so it may be a Win 8 issue, not just an XPS 12 problem

Try using Sleep instead.   My guess is a driver died.   Event viewer may have some clues.
