Windows 7 wont boot, Black Screen after BIOS

Anonymous
2013-01-06T00:12:01+00:00

When I start my laptop the BIOS will show, it then shows a flashing command line dash but then black screens at the point where windows 7 should start booting up, it will stay stuck there and nothing is shown on the screen. No cursor is shown or anything else that should be there.

So far I have checked the ram ( I haven't checked any other components yet), plugged the hard drive into another computer and checked the Windows folder (I didn't see any visible problems or missing files or folders). I could get into windows diagnostics before the black screen started but the diagnostics will get to 99% complete and then freeze (I tried it on all the diagnostic settings).

    Hi,

This does not sound like the typical Black Screen which most often loads to a black screen

with a moving cursor. Use the methods in this troubleshooter and if needed see the ones

in the next reply. Be aware that Black Screens are often extremely difficult to resolve.

I just let it sit and it finally booted after about a half an hour. It was extremely slow so I tried to opened up task manager. It seemed like it was getting better so I closed task manager and clicked on the start menu. When I tried to search it froze and a minutes later I got the BSOD and it crashed. Tomorrow I'll run a virus scan on the hard drive to check if there is a problem there. If not I'll run memory diagnostics on the repair disc.

    Hi,

Did you use the other commands and hit enter after each first?

If not please so and note any error messages.

You may also need to try the EasyBCD method.

Backing up the data and re-installing Windows might be the easiest thing to do, And

that may not work if it is hardware related.

I booted up the laptop on the installation disc, went into the command prompt and run the commands, but when I executed "bootrec /scanos" it returned "Total identified Windows installations: 0". When I restarted the laptop, I still got the black screen.

I will try some of the other options.

    Hi,

Why is my screen black when I start Windows 7?

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/why-is-my-screen-black-when-i-start-windows-7

**References to Vista also apply to Windows 7.**Saving any needed data and re-installing Windows 7 might be the best

option though here are a few others.

You can save your files by putting the drive in another computer or an

external drive case and then backing them up. Do so using several

methods in a redundant manner. Of course a real computer shop or

your System maker can help recover the files.

Or you could use an Ubuntu boot CD to back up the data.

Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer

    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer

Can you access Safe Mode? Repeatedly tap F8 as you boot? If so you can try Control Panel - Device Manager - Display Adapter - Double

Click on - Driver tab - click UPDATE driver - then Right Click on

    Device and UNINSTALL - REBOOT.

A method to try to access the desktop (try in both regular Windows

and Safe Mode) is to CTRL + ALT + DEL - Task Manager and on

Process Tab find EXPLORER.exe and END PROCESS on it -

then on Applications Tab - lower right - New Task - type in

EXPLORER.exe. Safe Mode is reached by repeatedly tapping F8

as you boot up. CTRL + SHIFT + ESC also starts Task Manager.

First check this thread in case its a simple one and if not come back

    to this thread.

Black screen issues are extremely tough to repair and any fix is

usually on a hit or miss basis. That there is no information on a black

screen like there is on a blue screen just adds to the difficulty. Often

using a restore point nor startup repair will have any effect.

You can try a google to see suggested repairs some of which have

worked however these cover a wide field of efforts.

Do you have a Window 7 Disk? You can try System Restore from it.

If you do not have the disks your system maker will sell them cheap.

Another method that sometimes works : In the Command Prompt of

a Windows 7 boot disk type : (type one line or copy and paste one line

    c:

    cd\
