OpenGL Problem After Upgrading to Windows 8 (Solved)

Hi, I recently upgraded my Windows 7 Home Premium 64x PC to Windows 8 Pro 64x and have been experiencing issues with my video card driver. My PC seems to be missing OpenGL or is not recognizing it. My graphics card driver is an AMD Radeon HD Series 3450 and there isn't any updates available for it except for the WDDM v1.1. I've downloaded and installed the AMD Catalyst for Windows 8 and have contacted AMD on this issue already. What I don't get is that when I had Windows 7 installed this error didn't show and OpenGL worked fine. Please help me with this error, I've been trying to fix this for weeks.

-Solved-

Months later after struggling with this problem, I found the fix on this site: http://www.lockergnome.com/windows/2012/09/29/make-your-old-graphics-drivers-work-in-windows-8/ (Works for AMD/ATI Drivers Only)

    Hi!

I struggled with the same problem until I found this driver:

    http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/catalystlegacywin8.aspx

Do note that this is an unsigned legacy-driver, and I have noticed that my camera-app stopped working after installation. It does however provide OpenGL support, and I value that higher than the new camera-app. (Skype may be a problem too.)

    Hi Sean,

Thank you for asking this query in Microsoft Community and we are glad to know that you have chosen Microsoft Windows 8 for your PC!!!

It seems like this is incompatibility issue with the Windows 8 on the computer.

Try the following steps and let’s know the result.

Method 1: Download the drivers for the Windows 7 and Install it in Compatibility Mode.

    1)       Download the drivers for the Windows 7 from the manufacturer’s website and save it in the computer.

    2)       Right click on the setup file, scroll down to Properties and click Properties.

    3)       On the window that pops up, click Compatibility tab.

    4)       Under Compatibility mode, check the box “Run this program in compatibility mode for”.

    5)       In the scroll down select “Windows 7”

    6)       Under Privilege Level, check the box “Run this program as an administrator”

    7)       Click Apply and Ok.

For reference, please click on the link given below:

Feel free to reply back, if you still face the issue.

    Thank you.

A SOLUTION FOR WINDOWS 8 OpenGL ERROR:

I've been looking through options and ideas for a year. Yes, an entire year.

I like playing Minecraft and installing Windows 8 stopped that in short order.

I have Intel Mobile Series 4 Family Chipset drivers and Intel is not upgrading them for Windows 8 —thanks, guys (-.-!)—so I've been messing with work-arounds.

I finally have a solution that actually works and is easy to follow—I'm sure other solutions work, but I had trouble following them as I'm not a computer tech; I only know enough to be dangerous.

There are three parts: 1) Downloading and modifying Windows 7/Vista drivers; 2) getting Windows 8 to allow you to install unsigned drivers; and 3) finally installing your drivers.

It might look complicated, but trust me, it's only detailed steps that are easy to take. Directions are at my blog at http://wp.me/p3Iwa6-4

Your directions were a godsend to me!  THANK YOU SO MUCH Patgun!

I am a 3 decade long software engineer in C, C++ and Java based on Windows, but I never would have figured this out.  I gave up gaming on Windows years ago because figuring out graphics drivers hassles like this are such a drag (vs. a fixed HW platform like an iPad let's say)...

In this case, well my kids got my 8 year old grandson his first "computer" for Christmas, a refurbished low end laptop primarily so he could play Minecraft on it.  It has Windows 8.1 with a Centrino processor with the Intel Mobile Series 4 Family Chipset for graphics and it had the latest drivers from Windows in it.  At first I thought the OpenGL error might have been a problem with being a low end chipset and that the HW itself would never work, but after googling a bit I found your excellent blog, so I did not give up on a fix, and it worked!

You explained things so well including the reasons behind the steps, so it makes a lot of sense.  My summary is that even though I had the latest driver from Windows and it was also the latest one from Intel (March 2013), apparently it had NO support for OpenGL, so going back to an older driver from Intel was the answer.  But I have no experience on how to disable the Win8 checks to allow me to install unsigned drivers so your directions were spot on.  Only 1 step was a little confusing as it was for Win8 and I had Win8.1 which has slightly different menus for the special way to restart it to get to the menu to turn off the check for signed drivers (option 7).

I performed your steps in a few minutes and Minecraft now runs fine. If you had a Paypal account I would donate to you! But I guess just seeing this thank you will have to suffice. I appreciated your work in creating all that documentation!
