There is an entry in the system events log from Windows File Protection, ID: 64005 reporting:

The protected system file ehtray.exe was not restored to its original, valid version because the Windows File Protection restoration process was cancelled by user interaction, user name is Sharie. The file version of the bad file is 5.1.2715.2765.

At least once a day, sometimes twice I receive an error message that windows must restore original version of files to maintain stability.  The reinstallation disc I have is not being accepted when asked for a cd.  I have ehtray exe. in  windows system 32, windows system 32 cache, windows ehome, and program files windows media player.  Is it harmful to ignore the message as nothing wrong is happening, checking occasionally to make sure its always the same file?.. Could the file itself be damaged.  Could I get a replacement file if so?

    Hi SharieBarker,

ehtray.exe is a tray bar process for the Microsoft media center. It gives you easy access to the digital media manager. This is a user dependent process you can disable it .

To disable it from start up entry, type MSCONFIG in start menu search bar, hit enter, go to startup tab, uncheck the media center process, click ok, restart when prompted.

I am running Windows XP MCE SP3, and Malwarebytes (free) is installed.  Ever since I upgraded in early December 2012 from McAfee Security Center version 10 to version 11 (currently 11.6 build 11.6.443), I sometimes receive messages saying "Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognised versions....". Sometimes it lists several DLLs in the event viewer, but it is often EHTRAY. I did not have this problem prior to the upgrade to V11 Security Center. I used MSCONFIG to disable EHTRAY (access to media center) and received no WFP errors for over a week. Even though I received a McAfee Security Center software update and obviously DAT file updates. As soon as I used MSCONFIG and re enabled EHTRAY I'm back to the WFP errors. I've tried working with McAfee technical support. With MSCONFIG, every time I logged on, I had the startup has changed messages and I did not like that. Is there just a simple way to disable ehtray and move on without the warnings each time? Or better still is there a solution? Thanks

Unable to complete sfc /scannow as it keeps asking for windows pro cd3 and I only have my reinstallation cd: windows xp media center edition 2005 with update rollup2 which it won't accept.  I haven't received the "files required for windows to run properly" error again since the one time after I changed startup in MSCONFIG.  Hoping I won't again.  I am using McAfee which I've had for seven years and is paid for for another year.  i did uninstall and reinstall it and it made me delete my malwarebytes program, but I still have superantispyware running and neither it nor McAfee have detected anything.  I also have and ran Advanced System Care and System Mechanic (both check for malware). Does anyone have a copy of ehtray.exe they could send me or let me download from a Sky Drive, so I could replace my instances with it to see if it is corrupt?  I am running XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 service pack 3.

Could you try sfc /scannow from command prompt and see if this solves the issue?

If not, you need to run a virus scan of your system. What antivirus are you using?

Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware detection programs:

    Malwarebytes (MBAM):  http://malwarebytes.org/

    SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS):  http://www.superantispyware.com/
