Windows 7 not reading DVD/CD media

Anonymous
2012-12-29T10:44:55+00:00

I am having issue with Win7 reading or seeing blank DVD/CD discs. The auto popup box does not appear after I place a disc in my player, but the feature is active.   When I go to Start; Computer; Cd Drive "E" and try to access the blank media I receive a message that says

Windows can't read the disc in drive E:\

Make sure that the disc uses a format that Windows

recognizes. If the disc is unformatted, you need tio format it

before using it.

Here is where I get stuck: since the "What do you want to do with this disc" pop-up does not appear I have no way of formatting this disc, as I am unable to locate another place which has this option. (note: this happens with all blank media and with all makers that I have placed in the player.)

Here's the kicker... when I open Windows Media Player and go to the burn tab....... there is my disc.

So far I have done all the recommended steps from my previous post and utilized the Mr. Fixit tool from Microsoft, replaced the cd drive and installed updated firmware. I just find it odd the in the Computer panel I cannot see the media at all.

Oh, and now everytime I boot my system up and get to the main page, I receive 2 messages that I have file to be copied in Drive E;, yet I cannot see the files until I insert a disc Win7 can see. So I don't know where to go and delete the files from, the queue for copying rto Drive E;.

Somehow I figured that this would all go away with the new drive, but alas I am back and asking for some guidance on how to get Win7 to read or see blank media in Drive E:\ and how to get rid of the annoying pop-up concerning the files that are waiting to be copied to Drive E:.

Sincerely, William

So I did a few tests:

    1. sfc /scannow found no integrity violations
    2. booted to Desktop, w/ms apps only.... no change reading balnk discs
    3. checked event veiwer and Windows error log for details of errors as follows:

Hello and Thank You for your response to my query,

There has been no changes to my PC prior or until 3 days ago, when I replcd the drive.

The Mr. Fix program did not clear the problem. Let me add a few symptoms:

The last time the drive worked properly was Apr. 2012, when I created my last backup  discs and restore discs. At least that is the latest date I have on record as being successful in creating these discs. I also find that I am unable to put any backup file on any media. AS I have a 150G external HD I was using to store backups from previous to Apr 2012. I have all but wiped and reformatted the external HD, as I don't want to lose what data I have left. Currently I am using a third of that drive, more than enough space remains for any additional backups or whatever I wish.

But the only program that won't write to my external HD is the backup and restore program. It begins the process and after a few minutes it stops stating that there is not enough space available and asks for another media. Thats when I tried the CD's and DVD's, Again not one of the 3 types of storage media will work for any of my backup files.

Now, when I access the Ext HD windows see it and can show me the directory and the 100G of free space available. Yet, windows sees only the used data on the CD/DVD discs, and whatever the used space totals to is listed as the total space available. Hence there is never any free space on a partially used CD/DVD disc.

But Windows Media Player sees both the free and the used and will allow me to add additional files to the free space, but Backup and Restore does use WMP to create discs.  The drive CD/DVD drive itself is seen and registers as working properly by windows. It's like there is a software issue with Win7 64b, Prof. seeing blank data on CDs or DVDs

AS I have been working on this problem for 6 months or more. I feel it may  be more of a problem with Win7 than my CD/DVD drive. I would go back and do a complete re-install if my backups where of a more current date.

    Sincerely, William

    Hi William,

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

Were there any changes made on the computer prior to the issue?

To clear the waiting files, select the folders/files from the "Files to add to the CD/DVD" area and press Delete. However, if you want to clear all the files, right-click the CD/DVD drive and select "Clear staging area" from the context menu.

To resolve the issue with the drive unable to read the discs, follow these methods:

    Method 1:

First, I would suggest you to refer to the link and try to run the fix it:

**Your CD or DVD drive can't read or write   media**

    Method 2:

Refer to the article and perform the steps manually:

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116

Let us know if it helps and if you need any further assistance.
