USB Hubs not recognized by Windows 7 64 bit

I have a Belkin USB Hub Model No. F4U017. When I plug it into a Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit laptop (HP Envy 14), Windows does not recognize it correctly. It does not work at all. I correctly plugged it into the wall socket and connected the wires properly.

When plugging it into the Windows machine, I get an error that a device driver was not installed correctly. When I look in device manager, I see that under Bluetooth Radios there is an extra entry titled “Broadcom 2046 Bluetooth 2.1 USB UHE Dongle”. It has an exclamation mark in a yellow triangle.

For some reason, Windows “thinks” that the USB Hub is a Broadcom Bluetooth Dongle. I checked the Belkin website but could not find a Windows 7 driver.

Hi doron,

1.    Are you able to use other USB devices on the computer?

I was also unable to find any information about this model available in the Belkin website.

As per the Windows 7 compatibility center there is no compatibility information about the USB hub there is a possibility that it may not be Windows 7 compatible.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspx

As a work around you may try the below steps and check if it works

Follow these steps in order and see if that makes any difference:

Method 1

As a first step uninstall the driver completely by following the below mentioned steps. Make sure you check the option to  “Delete the driver software for the device”. This will completely delete the software related to the driver.

Here’s how to do it:

a.    Click the Start button, click Control Panel, click System and Maintenance, and then click Device Manager. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

b.    Right click on the Disk Drive and click Properties.

c.    On the device Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Uninstall. Also check the box for  “Delete the driver software for this device” while uninstalling. Follow the instructions.

d.    Restart your computer.

Once you do this, connect the device and run the Hardware Troubleshooter if the device is not getting detected.

Method 2

If the above step fails then run the hardware troubleshooter using the below link.

What to do when a device isn't installed properly

If the above steps fail then contact Belkin support for more information about the device compatibility with Windows 7 64bit.

Hope this helps!

anyway this is what you do to fix the problem.

    device manager>

properties on the Broadcom Bluetooth 2.1>

    driver tab>

    update driver>

browse my computer for driver software>

let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer>

    Generic USB Hub>

    done.

This didn't work for me on Win 7 Pro 64-bit.  The "Generic USB Hub" was not listed as an installable driver.

In my case, there isn't a physical USB hub.  It is just a "soft" device that is connected to the "USB Root Hub", and all devices connect to the corresponding USB Port on the PC are connected through the "Generic USB Hub". In my case, the Hardware IDs included VID_8087 with PID_0024. Even though there was another working "Generic USB Hub" on the system (with VID_8087 and PID_0024), Windows would still not install the drivers for this second one.

After scouring Google, I eventually came across the Microsoft KB article: KB2529073

I didn't link to the article, because the article is about 90% irrelevant to the fix.

It did allow me to figure out this solution (worked for me, but I'm not responsible if this hoses your PC or anything else):

    1. Internet access, Administrator privileges, and a fully working Windows Update are required for this solution (If you don't have a working Windows Update or Internet access on the problem PC, then download the HotFix for KB2529073 for your processor architecture on a machine with Internet access and that will pass Windows Genuine Advantage validation. Copy to problem PC, and use that download instead of steps 10 and 11).
    2. Close all other programs, as this method involves two reboots.
    3. Run a Command Prompt as an Administrator.
    4. From the Command Prompt, run compmgmt.msc. (Computer Management Console)
    5. From the Computer Management console, select the Device Manager in the left-hand pane.
    6. In the right-hand pane, uninstall any Unknown Device that should be a Generic USB Hub.
    7. From the Command Prompt, run wusa /uninstall /kb:2529073. (This will uninstall the HotFix for KB2529073!)
    8. When the uninstall is complete, you should be prompted to reboot. Critical: Even if you are not prompted to reboot, you MUST do so (reboot) before following the remaining steps.
    9. Log in using an account with Administrator privileges.
    10. Run Windows Update.
    11. Select only the KB2529073 update, and install it. (This will reinstall the HotFix for KB2529073!)
    12. Reboot again (possibly not required, but a really good idea).

At this point, the Device Manager now showed the device as "Generic USB Hub" again (instead of "Unknown Device").

Thanks for this!! After days of searching I finally came across your article. Oddly many of my USB devices still worked but my logitech wireless headphones and wireless mouse just would not install (code 10 from the driver). After reapplying the hotfix it looks like I'm back in business.

Thanks again... I was at my wits' end!

    yo doron,

I had the same problem with mine and I contacted Belkin and they gave some generic answer. That bluetooth driver shows up as optional when you do a windows update. MS needs to fix that.

anyway this is what you do to fix the problem.

    device manager>

properties on the Broadcom Bluetooth 2.1>

    driver tab>

    update driver>

browse my computer for driver software>

let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer>

    Generic USB Hub>

    done.

I really don't know why that usb hub is registering as a Broadcom Bluetooth 2.1 + to windows update. It's very recent as I've had the hub for a few months then sometime in september maybe I saw the optional Bluetooth 2.1 driver and im thinking wtf i dont have bluetooth, or do I........so installed then it jacked the hub up. anyway that should fix the driver confusion for you.

    gl,

    liam
