    Hi,

Thank you for writing in Microsoft Community.

Device Manager displays a list of all devices that are installed on a Windows based computer. When you view device information in Device Manager, you may see a device listed as Unknown Device next to a yellow question mark. It may be difficult to determine the cause of this unknown device, because there are few indications of what generates it.

The main reason for Unknown Device to display in your Device Manager is because you have a device that is not working correctly. To fix this issue, obtain an updated driver for the device.

Have you tried right-clicking the Unknown Device and selecting Update Driver Software? What happens when you try the same?

    Note:

A spinning cursor is indicative of a user started task that is still being processed i.e. the task has not completed. There are a number of explanations why it occurs for long rather than short periods of time.

Let's try the following and check:

    Method 1:

Open the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter to check if that detects anything:

If your computer is having problems with a recently installed device or other hardware, try using the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter to fix the problem. It checks for common issues and makes sure that any new device or hardware attached to your computer was installed correctly.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows7/Open-the-Hardware-and-Devices-troubleshooter

    Method 2:

    Now try these steps:

    Step 1:

    a. Please "Open Device Manager" and let us know if there is any error message listed.

    Step 2:

Since the device gets detected as Unknown, let’s check for the status of the same.

    b. Right-click the Unknown Device in Device Manager and select Properties.

    c. Under General tab, check for the status of the Unknown Device under Device status.

Does it show any error message/code associated with the Unknown Device? If yes, let us know the exact error message.

    Step 3:

Let’s also check for the Hardware Ids and see if that throws some light on the Unknown Device.

    a. Right-click the Unknown Device in Device Manager and select Properties.

    b. Click the Details tab.

    c. Under Property, select Hardware Ids from the drop-down menu.

What are the values that appear in the Value box?

Let us know the details and we shall proceed with the troubleshooting accordingly.

    Hi,

I have this problem too.  Can anyone help to solve this?

In Elevated Diagnostics, the issues found that there is no driver installed for Unknown device.

    The Device information ID:  ACPI\NSC1200\5&36A86B68&0

    Error Code:  28

Problem with PnP devices --> Detected**!**

When I selected Update Drive Software it searched online.

The results:  "Windows was unable to install your Unknown Device...

    Could not find driver software."

In Owner PC Properties window it says in Location:  on Generic Bus

When I selected Step 2 (above):

The Device Status says, "The driver for this device are not installed (Code 28)...There is no driver selected for the device information set or element."

When I selected Step 3 (above):

The Hardware Ids value box says:  ACPI\NSCI1200  -->  *NSCI1200

    Hi,

Update the USB drivers for your computer by visting the manufacturer's website.

Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Update-a-driver-for-hardware-that-isnt-working-properly

If the above step does not help us to diagnose the issue, uninstall the drivers for USB [Universal Serial bus] host controller and restart the computer. Let Windows install the generic drivers and then see if it helps you to fix the issue.

    a) Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button, then Device Manager in the search box.‌

    b) If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    c) Look for the device under USB [Universal Serial bus] host controller, right click on it and select Uninstall.

    d) Reboot the computer.

    e) On reboot, Windows should re-install the drivers automatically.

    Hope this helps.
