Hi,
Sometimes it is necessary to click on the desktop for this to work...especially if other windows are open or have just been closed.
This browser is no longer supported.
Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
I have just installed windows 8 in my Dell Studio 1555.
For shutting down by using Alt+F4 doesn't work even by fn+Alt+F4.
Thank in advance

Hi,
Sometimes it is necessary to click on the desktop for this to work...especially if other windows are open or have just been closed.
VLC is the only window I have opened and so it is expected that I be on the desktop after pressing alt+f4. From the post below, clearly I am not the only person who experiences this and Microsoft should notice that it's operating system is not doing what is expected of it in this case.
I know it isn't a major deal, but it would be a pretty simple fix to detect if no window is open and if a desktop icon has focus. If so then treat the alt+f4 as though the desktop itself had focus.
Are you trying to close an app or shutdown your PC?
Alt + F4 closes an app.
You can also close an app by dragging from the top to the bottom of the app's screen with your pointer.
To shutdown your PC, bring up the Charms bar then select Settings then Power then Shutdown.
I have noticed this...
When I alt+f4 out of say vlc media player back to my desktop, I expect to be able to do it once more, press enter and leave it to shut down.
I work out and I use my laptop to hook up to my big TV, being all hot and tired, having to move the mouse and tap the desktop each time is just a bit annoying.
Seems a little buggy really, I hope Microsoft decide to fix this.

Hi
In addition you can use the Alt+F4 command on the Windows 8 Desktop to display the computer shutdown options.
