Find Apple AirPort Extreme Device and External Disk in Windows 8 Pro Network Devices

First off. I have NO Apple computers or devices in my home. I am running Windows 8 Pro on a HP Pavilion Laptop Entertainment PC.

I have a new Apple AirPort Extreme (5th Gen).

I should be able to logically solve this problem but have not been able to.

Problem: Cannot find the AirPort Extreme as a device on my "private" network nor the USB 3.0 connected External Hard Drive.

What works:

  1. I have a simple Workgroup network (let's call it WORKGROUP)
  2. I have a HomeGroup created by my Computer
  3. All other devices are able to connect to the Internet using Wi-Fi (Computer, Printer, Phone, Kindle, Roku and so on)
  4. I can see the above devices if sharing is turned on
  5. I can configure the AirPort using the AirPort Utility (except when I update it, I have to reboot my computer)

What I have tried on my computer:

  1. Running HomeGroup Troubleshooter Results: "Some HomeGroup problems are network-related.

We recommend that you troubleshoot network problems before continuing." 2. Windows Network Diagnostics results: "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem" 3. I have checked the Event Viewer in the Windows Logs and found nothing that indicates a network or computer error 4. Many other things but I am tired of explaining

What I have tried on the AirPort Utility:

  1. I have enabled all SNMP over WAN with the community string to "public"
  2. I have changed Radio Channel Selection to Manual and the 2.4GHz to channel 11 and back to Automatic
  3. Disks: Shows the Toshiba External USB 3.0 0201 there
  4. Disks > File Sharing:

Enable and Share over WAN

Secure Shared Disks: With device password (which there is none)

Workgroup: WORKGROUP

WINS Server: -Left Blank- 5. NAT: I have not really tried much but it was a thought 6. Many more things but would rather someone just tell me how to fix it

You need to make sure that the Airport Extreme recognize your disk.

I only know the mac version of the airport utility version, but i assume that the windows version also have a wizard to setup.

The shared folder name should not contain spaces.

The easist way is to set tthe secure access to "With Airport Extreme password".

But this means that everybody who can access the disk will have access to everything.

Find out what the AE IP address is (shows on first page)

    At windows 8:

    Start file explorer

Click on Computer on the left side

Click on "Computer menu" on top of the window

    Choose "Add a network location"

Then : next - choose a custom network location - next

    Fill in :

    \<IP address of AE>,<shared foldername>

    or

    \<AE name><shared foldername>

Note the < and > are only markers (do not fill in)

    So for example

    \192.168.1.1\Disk

Click next- if OK windows will ask you for a password.

If you use "With Airport Extreme password" then you can put everything as username (you do have put something in (windows require it,but the AE will ignore it)

Fill in the AE password for the password.

Answer following questions (pretty straight forward) and you have a shortcut to the disk

Sorry for the typo's. Spelling checking does not works Ok yet.

    Hope it helps
