I was elated to think that I could use the surface RT with a CAC reader, but I noticed that there isn't much in the way of the Windows store that allows me to read and edit .xfdl files without pureEdge or lotus viewer, neither in the store.

suggestions?

recommendations?

Thanks for your reply; notepad didn't seem to want to open the files that I needed without translating it into wingdings.

The military uses IBM lotus viewer and pure edge to read and edit these DA and DD forms: anything in the future of the windows store that will let me do on windows RT?

I know this information is not exactly what you are looking for but the Army is moving away from Lotus forms and AprovIT software. The main thing you need to be looking for is if you can digitally sign documents in adobe reader. If RT allows you to do that then you will be good to go NLT FY2015 and probably sooner than that. I have already seen some of the forms being switches over on the Army Publishing Directorate site.

Have there been any developments on this? The files that I need are usually opened by lotus or pureEdge. Is there anything in the works to bring this to the RT?

    Hi,

Thank you for choosing Windows RT.

It looks you are unable to open or edit .xfdl files on Windows RT. We will work together and try to resolve the issue.

An XFDL file is a data file primarily used by businesses to store business transactions and other legally binding transactions. The XFDL format is based off of XML, a similar format used make documents more accessible for HTML. XFDL files are supported by Windows Notepad, the built-in basic text editor for all Windows operating systems.

You may launch Notepad and open the file to check.

    a. Launch start screen and search for Notepad.

    b. Click on ‘file’ tab and open the xfdl file from the downloaded location.

You can also search for third party programs to open. XFDL file using your favorite search engine.

Note: Using Third Party Software, including hardware drivers can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Third Party Software can be solved. Using Third Party Software is at your own risk.

Hope this helps. Let us know if you need further assistance with Windows related issues. We will be happy to help.
