Apple iPhone 4s is not recognized on my computer.

I have been trying to plug my iPhone 4s into my computer, so I can sync my new music onto it, but my computer is not recognizing it for some reason. A message that says "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message", keeps popping up every time I plug in my device. When I click that message, in Device Manager, my Iphone is bolded with the words "unknown device", and I noticed that I don't see the Apple Mobile Device Ethernet located in Device Manager like it used to be, but that isn't the problem. It didn't work with the AMDE located in DM. When I click "unknown device", Code 43 is shown "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems". What's even weirder is that my computer has installed the driver for the "unknown device", but it still doesn't recognizes it. I checked all of my devices in Device Manager and all of it is working fine.

What I have tried:

  • I tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes
  • Stopping and restarting the Apple Mobile Device and Bonjour under "services".
  • Disabling, enabling, uninstalling, reinstalling "Unknown Device", all of my USB ports about a million times (It worked for a split second and then it broke again)
  • Tried using different usb cables
  • Tried using different usb port for each usb cables
  • Unplugged my computer for 30 seconds and plugging it back up
  • Restarting my computer
  • Took out my battery for 30 seconds and put it back in
  • Made sure automatic updating is turned on
  • Checked for updates in Windows Updates
  • Made sure iTunes and my iPhone 4s is up to date
  • Ran Hardware and Device Troubleshooter
  • Did System Restore
  • Charged my iPhone fully
  • Turned my iPhone off and on
  • Restarted my iPhone
  • Updated the driver for the 'unknown device' with it saying it was supposedly up to date
  • Screenshot my iPhone and checked to see if it showed up as a camera in Device Manager; it did not
  • Stopped and Restarted all Apple devices in "Services"
  • Did itunes diagnostics
  • Closed all opened apps on my iPhone
  • Made sure my computer is up to date

I tried everything and nothing worked. I searched all over the internet for solutions and no solutions so far. I even tried Apple Support and checked their forums and nothing. Please help, I want to sync my iPhone again.

My computer information:

Product name: HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC

Serial number: CNF034B090

Product number: VX070AV

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Service Pack 1

My problem only started recently like a few weeks ago. It used to recognize my iPhone and sync my music and stuff, but now it doesn't for some reason. It does the same to my brother's old computer. I haven't synced anything, since July 3rd, it says because I didn't have my computer since then and until now, so I have been using my brother's old computer and it worked fine, until after New Years Day. Then all of a sudden it doesn't want to recognize my iPhone. I thought it was because my brother's old computer was old. It's about 5 or 6 years old, so I thought that was the reason, until I tried to plug it up to this computer. Now, I have no idea what's going on.

I have had the same problem, and done everything, not happy with both companies, Windows blame Apple, Apple blames Windows- consumers get screwed. I have tried everything too, nothing is working.

I am not impressed by either company by not having a solution for this problem.

I suffered all the problems you have mentioned.  After a day of trying to get my Windows 7 to recognize my iPhone 4S, I shut down the computer in frustration.  When I started it up again, voila! my iPhone was recognized.  I did prior to shutting down update all software for iPhone and Windows 7.  Maybe all it needed to respond was the shutdown.  Hope this helps.

    Hi Craig,

Welcome to Microsoft Community and thank you for posting the question. I understand that apple iphone 4s is not getting recognized. I apologize for the inconvenience caused. Let me help you with the issue.

    1.Which security software is installed?

2.Did you make any changes to the computer prior to the issue?

In order to troubleshoot this issue, let us try these methods:

    Method 1.

I would suggest you to uninstall and reinstall the usb controllers to check the status.

To remove and reinstall all USB controllers, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Click the Hardware tab.
    3. Click the Device Manager Button.
    4. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    5. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.
    6. Restart the computer, and then reinstall the USB controllers.
    7. Plug in the USB device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved.

    Method 2.

Run a full computer scan with the Microsoft Safety Scanner to make sure that the computer is virus free.

    Microsoft Safety Scanner: http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Safety Scanner Disclaimer: There could be a loss of data while performing a scan using Microsoft safety scanner to eliminate virus if any.

    Method 3.

I would suggest you to perform SFC scan and check if that helps. The SFC /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

For more information how to do SFC/ scan, please follow this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

    Additional Information.

    Install a USB device: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Install-a-USB-device

I hope this helps. If you need further assistance on this particular issue or any other Windows related issue let us know and we will be glad to assist you.

    Thank you.

No evidence of driver for iPhone 4S in device manager and iPhone not recognized on computer screen when connected via USB cable.  How can I fix?  Have downloaded current iTunes.
