Wondering what logic was used to put forward such an obvious plan at "selling apps"..

It's complete ****! I have seven machines of which 2 are Windows 8 (purchased for family members, one costing over £1,000) and Windows 8 is a disaster of epic proportions. It is wholly business unfriendly, the apps do not shut down, the integration of everything via a single login means that one vulnerability causes all applications to be insecure, the layout is appalling (at least you can get hold of Classic Shell to at least make a pc look like a pc), many reputable retailers will not sell Windows 8 machines because it's a very bad OS, Microsoft has forced the big retailers to sell pc's pre-loaded with Windows 8 and make people jump through hoops to roll back to Windows 7, the system firmware (whilst an improvement), was never set for use with Windows 7 and Windows 8 is as bad as if not worse than, Windows ME or that other rubbish platform Vista. Awesome? Only for screwing up what could have been a good development.

I agree with the naysayers, Sorry.

It is a horrible idea that wants to suck you up and connect to every part of your life. I really don't want to see the same faces from my email contact list EVERY time I start up. I want to use the computer for work, or for study, or to log on to email, or to log on to social media and I want everything to be kept separate and not one part of a hideous information-hoarding Microsoft whole. I do not want to be owned by a software company. I want to pay one to give me a product I can use, how I want to use it - not on its terms, on mine, for the money I pay. Mac- or Microsoft-sponsored people I find slightly queasy, and it is an unsavoury side of big-business. I wish Microsoft would stop trying to ape Apple-smugness. They are beginning to look like a geography teacher dancing.

Windows 8 is also of outstandingly ugly design. A colour-blind muck-throwing chimp could do better, and this is no more than Microsoft deserve for this one.

I had my hand forced as I needed to buy a PC for a software package needed for a module I am studying for. Before 48 hours were up, I took my PC back to the store where I bought it from for advice, the words "Windows 8" were mentioned and the salesperson -not me- suggested a refund. I got a refund. I have altered my studies so I don't ever have this experience again. I will just have to learn R. Muuuch less annoying than this whole PC nightmare. But for Windows 8, I would have been happy enough with a PC to go alongside my other computer. What a ridiculous and sinister system.
