I have a tech, work on my computer for $125.00 He purchased an Dell Re-installation DVD Operating  Version 5 with update rollup 2 and installed it and also a Drivers and Utilities disk DVD for installing Dell Dimension and Dell XPS Computer software and downloaded it and I still have the disk's.

Some where I had the misfortune of the computer going goofy with my programs.(Most likely my fault)! I now can not get into my system restore nor can I do any recovery operation, Nor can I defrag and/or change my permissions.. as they say to get the administrator to change permisions?? GO FIGURE

I am the only one on the Computer and do not share it.

While I can not get programs , A message appears and says ( MMC can not find defrag.exe

Respective to System recovery (By Pressing F-8 to get recovery source It says the same thing respective to system restore. I have tried to load my installation disk but when the screen comes up to select options It is just (Blank)

I have spent too much on this OLDIE but still would like it to work correct. Note: As you can see I can run any of my serch engine's and get any Web site correctly, and send and receive mail. SO I am not completely Lost. But would accept any Idea's that any one may have. I shall continue trying to solve the problem'(s) though as time passes. Thank You Kindly for the attempt's   Gene

So you have a Dell Windows XP OEM installation CD?

Wipe it and restore to factory defaults.  Update to Service Pack 3 and the 100+ updates beyond that.  Update all the drivers from the Dell web page for that model system.  Yes - all very much free.

Your "Tech" did not get charged $125 for the "DVD" of Windows XP, if hey told you that or got roped into that - one way you got taken, the other way you both did.

Your best bet is to restore it to factory defaults and fully update it as suggested.

    Hi Gene,

Is have noticed from your post, that your system is still not fully updated to the latest service pack. Why not? Please verify your service pack level by clicking the start button, then clicking run, and in the run dialog box, Type "Winver".

**1.**What is the current service pack level... SP2 0R SP3?

2.What is the make and model number of your computer?

    1. Do you have AV Program installed and is it up to date?

Since you are having these issues with accessing certain programs in your system, let's first make sure that the system is clean.

Download and run full scans with these .

    Malwarebytes AV (FREE)

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/lp/malware_lp_form

    SuperAntispyware(Free).

    http://www.superantispyware.com/index.html

Note: Run them separately, and remove anything found, and when you are done, reboot after each run then post back with the answers to the above questions.
