    That's one way!

Replacing the msvcp60.dll on a system that will not boot is not a big deal since you can still boot the system on some bootable CD that you have or one you can make (no XP media required) and just replace the file.  There is a copy on my SkyDrive anyone can download and put on their system.

It could be that other files were somehow "missing" too, so maybe you saved some time with the Repair.

Did a repair from the console; problem solved after installing service packs.

I don't think your system will boot if the msvcp60.dll is missing or corrupt (but you can probably still fix it) however I am not a Microsoft engaged Support Engineer "expert" so do give those "expert" ideas a shot and let us know how that works out.

If the msvcp60.dll file is missing, you will see a message like this:

services.exe - Unable To Locate Component

This application has failed to start because msvcp60.dll was not found.  Re-installing the application may fix this problem.

If the msvcp60.dll file is corrupt, you will see a message like this:

    services.exe - Bad Image

The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSVCP60.dll is not a valid Windows image.  Please check this against your installation diskette.

If you click OK (in either scenario), you will have an empty black screen with just a movable mouse cursor and Safe Mode with Command Prompt will not get far enough along to open a Command Prompt window so those are not good options for you.  Task Manager will not work either.

P.S.  The first link provided by the Microsoft engaged Support Engineer "expert" doesn't work and the second link, if your system would boot, will give you the msvcp60.dll from 13 years ago, so I am not too sure that is what you need either.

    Hi Alton,

Thank you for posting the question on the Microsoft Community Forums.

Based on the description provided, it looks like you are facing an issue while restarting your computer.

msvcp60.dll is a module containing standard C library functions such as printf, memcpy, and cos. It is a part of the Microsoft C Runtime Library. Non-system processes like msvcp60.dll originate from software you installed on your system.

    It will be located “C:\Windows\System32”.

I would suggest you to download the VC6RedistSetup_enu.exe package from the link below and check if that helps.
