    Hi There,

Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer and communications platform developed by Valve Corporation. It is used to distribute games and related media online, from small independent developers to larger software houses. One of the ideas behind it is to help with the fight against videa game piracy. For alot of games you need to have a Steam account, and it is through this that you authenticate using your account so that steam and the game know that it is being used legally.

    The steam website is:

    http://store.steampowered.com/

From there you can find out more information, download Steam and sign up for an account.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards

    Nobular

    Steam Faqs  main page

Running in off line mode page

With Steam you will have to let Steam update it's platform (client), and your game

before you can play the game - Even single player games will not run until they have been

updated. This can be very frustrating for those with slow internet speeds.

    • Once updated you can select an option not to keep the game updated. This is useful for

single player games and very helpful for those with slow internet connections.

Be aware that if you do have a slow internet that you should leave it disconnected when

launching any Steam linked game you want to play off line as Steam has a mind of it's own

and will often start an update on a game you have said you don't want updated if you load

that game while on line. This is more likely to happen if you have not been on line with Steam

    for some time.

"steam must be running to play this game." would apply most often to multi-player games.

These games get more frequent updates than single player games.

Some particularly A**ly-retentive game publishers also expect you to be on line all the time when

playing their single player games - Ubisoft  is  this way with some of their games.
