Original Title: PCL XL error

I have a HP Laserjet 5M on our network.  I have a XP and Windows 7 device that prints fine, a Desktop with Windows 8 that gets the following message when I print this is what is displayed on the paper.

 PCL XL error

     Subsystem: KERNEL

     Error:  UnsupportedProtocol

    Operator:  0x0

    Position: 0

I don't see other problem/solutions that look similar.  Can anyone help?

I used the Microsoft link above to download the printing troubleshooter software. When I ran the tool it could see the printer however, it did not fix the problem. I ended up going back to the HP web site and found a complete HP 5M update file to downloaded. Once I installed this new file I am able to use the HP LaserJet 5M on the network again.

I had the same problem.  I found that the ADD PRINTER wizard wants to install the HP LaserJet Pro CP1525 PCL 6 Class Driver and I DO NOT have option to select the correct driver for the printer.

Windows 10 operating system.  HP 3030 initially printed ok.  Now, all I see when printing is following message: PCL XL error Subsystem: KERNAL Error: UnsupportedProtocol Operator: 0x0 Position: 0

Installed updated driver to no avail.

    Hi Dennis,

Thank you for posting the issue on Microsoft Community.

We will try to help you fix the issue.

We would appreciate if you answer these questions.

    1. What is the make and model of the computer?
    2. Did you make any changes in the computer prior to the issue?
    3. Have you upgraded or done custom installation of windows 8?

Here are a few steps which you can follow:

    Method 1:

Run Printer troubleshooter from the link given below.

    Fix printer problems

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/printer-problems-in-windows-help#fix-printer-problems=windows-8&v1h=win8tab1&v2h=win7tab1&v3h=winvistatab1&v4h=winxptab1

    Method 2:

If you have done a custom installation of windows 8, then uninstall the drivers completely and reinstall it again.

If Windows 8 drivers are not available, you may install Windows 7 drivers in Windows 7 compatibility mode and check if it helps:

    Refer:

    steps:

    a. Download the drivers from the manufacturer's website.

    b. Right-click on the driver and click on ‘properties’.

    c. Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 7 operating system from the drop down.

    d. Click on ‘Apply’ and click ‘OK’ to install it.

Hope this resolves the issue. If issue persists, you can write back to us and we will be glad to assist you further.
