How do I fix unrecognized files, if Windows File Protection fails to recognize my Windows XP SP3 CDs?

Windows File Protection, whether as I run it automatically or pursuant to  instructions, returns the error message, "Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions.  To maintain system stability Windows must restore the original versions of these files.  Insert your Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD now"  Microsoft, of course, does not distribute a "Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD"; rather, it offers by download or purchase a "Windows XP Service Pack 3" CD, that Microsoft sometimes identifies as functional for Windows XP Professional and, my operating system, Windows XP Professional Media Edition Version 2002.  When I insert either my Service Pack 3 CD made from a download from Microsoft or the Service Pack 3 (2008) CD (Part No. X14-60166-02) that I purchased from Microsoft, WFP responds with the error message, "The CD you provided is the wrong CD.  Please insert the Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD into your CD-ROM drive."

For example, could I reinstall SP 3 over my existing installation (SP 3 does not appear on the file list displayed by the "Add/Remove Programs" utility, so I apparently uninstall and then reinstall it); and, if so, would I lose and thus have somehow to reinstall all post-2008 updates to SP 3 files?

My Event Viewer, System log of WFP events states, for example, as follows:

Actually the SP 1,2, & 3 files are not what xp needs for Sfc to run.

The OS files can/could be replaced or repaired as needed with a 2002

xp installation cd (retail),even with all SP installed. If you have a xp

installation cd,simply go to run, type: cmd  In cmd, type: Sfc /Scannow

Once it starts, install xp cd,exit the menu window,Sfc runs auto.

    Once its thru,remove xp cd,type: CHKDSK C: /F

Agree to restart, type: EXIT  Restart pc,CHKDSK will run on restart.

By "Once it starts, install xp cd,exit the menu window,Sfc runs auto." do you mean to use my 2002 Windows XP Professional CD to install (reinstall) Windows XP over the existing installation, then upon completion of that installation to exit the Windows XP installation menu window, remove the Windows Xp 2002 CD, and then run CHKDSK C: /F?

We also don't know what you are using for antivirus/antimalware protection, but I will guess McAfee.

The MS Answers forums people still don't get it...   prompting for these little bits of information when a new question is asked - many problems could be solved easily on day one with only a few message cycles and you would probably have be done days ago - or at least on track to being done.  Now, 2 days later, I am not sure you are any further along than when you got started.

    Among a few other questions:

What is your system make and model?

What is your XP Version and Service Pack?

Describe your current antivirus and anti malware situation:  Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!,  Panda, Trend Micro, CA, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc.

Does the afflicted system have a working CD/DVD drive (internal or external)?

Do you have a genuine bootable XP installation CD that is the same Service Pack as your installed Service Pack (this is not the same as any Recovery CDs that came with your system)?

    The first sentence is correct:

Actually the SP 1,2, & 3 files are not what xp needs for Sfc to run.

It's not at all clear what version of Windows XP your system currently has.  What you need is neither the Service Pack CD nor your original Windows XP installation CD but a CD that would install Windows XP at the same service pack level as your existing system.  Right click "My Computer" and select Properties.  Look at the General tab to see which service pack, if any, is currently installed.

Assuming that you have installed at least one service pack since the time that Windows XP was first installed on your computer, you need to combine your original XP installation CD with the necessary service pack in order to get a CD that will satisfy SFC.  The following discussion assumes that you do have service pack 3 installed.

You get the required CD through a process called "slipstreaming."  There are many tutorials on this subject available on the Internet.  Here's a sampling --> http://lmgtfy.com/?q=how+to+slipstream+xp+sp3 Several of these tutorials explain how to include the many post-sp3 critical updates in the finished CD (this is useful if you're going to reinstall Windows, but it's not what SFC needs).

I haven't looked at all of the various sites, but at a quick glance, this one seems pretty easy to follow: http://www.lancelhoff.com/how-to-slipstream-service-pack-3-into-windows-xp/

Two points to consider when choosing a tutorial:

    • nLite is probably the easiest way to create a slipstreamed ISO file, although several other methods will work just as well
    • You can't add service pack 3 directly to a Windows XP Gold (no service packs) CD.  You need to get to either service pack 1, 1a, or 2 before adding 3.  Probably the most straightforward method (if you have an XP Gold CD) would be to create a slipstreamed CD that includes sp2 and then use that as the source for slipstreaming with sp3 (it's a little hard to find a download of XP sp1 these days).

And finally, if the method you use does not include a means to actually create a CD from the generated ISO file, the best tool for doing that is ImgBurn, which is free.

Right click and disable the non Microsoft extensions one at a time (or perhaps in groups of 3-5 at a time) keeping a list so you can enable them again later if desired. The result of the change is immediate and no reboot is required. Test your failure condition. If Explorer starts to behave, you will know that some extension in that group of 3-5 is the culprit so you can start to enable them one at a time until explorer fails again.
