Hello.

As the title states can someone tell me where exactly in the registry (I believe) does Windows XP keep the settings for the System Tray Notification Settings ? In particular I would like to know where the settings for Hiding or Showing the balloon tips for each application typically found at the bottom right corner of the screen are kept ? I've taken a screen shot of a notification which I am trying to describe please see this link. Sorry the auto link feature for this post was not working for my browser.

Any help would be appreciated

That is XP, cannot change it.

some programs allow you to change the settings, but once you have edited the registry, you will not get any notifications from any program.

the taskbar customizations are for showing or not showing the ICON, nothing about notifications.

you are going to CREATE the Dword  see picture

    1. right click on Advanced
    2. go to new
    3. dword value

    1. in box you will type in EnableBalloonTips        (just like that, no spaces)
    2. click on an open space
    3. you now have a listing EnableBalloonTips
    4. right click on this and choose modify
    5. type in the box  0  (zero)

I do not have that key in my xp pro, since I do not want to disable my notifications.

I do have the other two you mentioned, tray notify and start button, these are not the same as what you are creating.

However, I would not change any other listing except the one that is listed in the support doc.

and you should backup your registry also:

when you close the registry, close out thru the file menu, and also reboot your pc.

    Thanks very much Elizabeth.

You have been very helpful. I do have one more question to ask of you. When you right click over the Start menu and choose Properties you get the Start Menu and Task Bar window. In there you can customize one or all of the applications that have a system tray icon and that also display a balloon tip notification. So why does the Registry not show all of each of these applications and allow you to customize any of them as opposed to all or nothing  ?

you can not change the ballon notices individually, except through the program itself.

in the registry you can either turn off ALL  or none:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307729

you will be editing the registry and it will turn off all balloon notices.

    Thank you Elizabeth23.

I did follow the instructions from the link you had provided above. The article does indicate that it does apply to Windows XP Professional but I could not find the key (EnableBalloonTips) in my registry. However at this same path there was a key called StartButtonBalloonTip. Also I also found the following registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify\BalloonTip

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\EnableBalloonTips

Can someone verify whether their copy of Windows XP Pro or equivalent does have this registry key I've noted here below ?

    **HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced**EnableBalloonTips

    Thanks
