How do I tether an Android phone to Windows 7?

This is what happens:

  • On my Motorola RAZR M, I go to settings > tethering > ON
  • Windows & detects a connect, fails to connect
  • click "open network and sharing center" via icon in system tray (bottom right)
  • after about a minute, Windows 7 (Home 64 bit), creates a new Network connect (either HomeGroup or Public network)

Everytime it gives the connection a new name. We're upto Network 19 on day 2.

Is there any option to get Windows to remember this connection for next time?

Is there a better process to follow?

    I tried:

network & sharing center> Connections > Properties > un-tick "client for windows networks"

    reboot computer & reboot phone

    turn tethering on again

Connected via Network 27, public network (rolls eyes)

    Hi Tony,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

From your issue description, I understand that, every time you connect android phone it creates new internet connection.

I can imagine the inconvenience you have experienced.

Are you using WEP or WPA?

Let’s follow these methods and check if it fixes the issue.

Method 1: If you are using WEP connection, change it to WPA and check if it helps.

Method 2: Let’s turn off IEEE authentication.

    a. Right click on wireless network icon in the system tray.

    b. Select Network and sharing center

    c. In the left pane, select change adapter settings.

    d. Right click on wireless network connection icon.

    e. Select properties.

    f. Turn off IEEE authentication.

Method 3: Remove all wireless networks listed in theNetwork and Sharing Center.

    a.       Click Start and select Control Panel.

    b.      Open Network and Sharing Center.

    c.       Click Manage Wireless Networks.

    d.      Remove all wireless network listed in this list.

    e.      Restart computer.

Select your wireless network and connect (if secure, input your password).

Now configure the new wireless network.

While configuring select “Start this connection automatically”.

Hope this helps. If the issue persists or if you have any Windows related queries please get back to us. We are happy to help you.

    Glossary:

WEP: Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is a security algorithm for IEEE 802.11 wireless networks.

WPA: Wi-Fi Protected Access, a security protocol and security certification program

Tethering: connecing devices together either by wireless or via USB cable.

The issue I described occurs when tethering with USB cable; hence Windows 7 seems to think the 2 devices are forming a network.

None of the above comments on Wireless networks apply, and none of the commands listed are visible.

When I click the "Network 24 Internet access" icon in the system tray, and open "Network and Sharing center", and then click the blue writing labelling the connection, it says there is IPv4 Connectivity. Whatever that means.

In researching this problem, I have seen that it frequently occurs with all types of phones tethering to WIndows 7 Home Premium by USB cable. Why not try it yourself?
