KB 2670838 - The EVIL UPDATE

Why don't you fix the errors caused by KB 2670838 instead of having my computer re-install it as part of IE 10 without giving me any warning that it was going to do that?

This update has two effects on my system*; 1. For whatever reason, it turns the lower taskbar turquoise, 2. Explorer 9 or 10 and Chrome 25 get a 60 delay in information typed into them with internet speeds reminiscent of dial-up, while Firefox 19 ceases to function at all; The internet becomes essentially non-usable.

I wasted an entire day on this two weeks ago including an hour on the phone with one of your technicians when it was first installed.  He had no idea what the problem was and I eventually gave up and uninstalled it.  My problems ceased immediately upon its removal.

I had to go to an internet forum to learn that many people had these problems and how to set my updates to not automatically be installed.  That proved to be no help as when installing IE10 this EVIL UPDATE (KB 2670838) just re-appeared again with no notice in your description that this might happen.  Now I guess I will never install an update again since you provide no clues as to what it could do.

* My system info:

HP Envy, Windows 7 Home Premium, two screens attached using an HP usb notebook port replicator.  Buy the way, this HP port replicator is a piece of garbage that has to be rebooted (the replicator - not the PC) as it freezes once or twice a day.  But I thinks that's on HP - not you.

    Fact: KB2670838 is a Prerequisite Update for IE10 <edit> and/or IE11. </edit>

    Fact: If KB2670838 isn't already installed, it will be installed for you when you choose to install IE10

    ...and/or IE11 - along with all other prerequisite updates.

    • IE10 Prerequisites include KB2729094, KB2731771, KB2533623, KB2670838 & KB2786081.
    • IE11 Prerequisites include KB2729094, KB2731771, KB2533623, KB2670838, KB2786081 & KB2834140.

    Fun Fact: As of 12 January 2016, IE11 will be the only version supported in Win7. See http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2014/08/07/stay-up-to-date-with-internet-explorer.aspx

    Fact: IE10-for-Win7 is not ready for "prime time" - which is why it's not being pushed via Automatic Updates yet.

    Fact: When Microsoft decides to push IE10 via Automatic Updates, free support will begin - but for now, you're on your own.

    Tip: Stick with IE9 for the time being & save yourself a lot of grief.

    PS: No one from Microsoft Support monitors this peer-to-peer support forum.

    OK, I have a windows 7 64 bit pc running service pac1, and running IE9, and this update is installing automatically on my pc as well. Causing some issues on this computer, and would like to disable this update, but it seems to continue to install again and again. Any ideas?

    Also, to give you a better idea, this is a corporate network, and this particular update is causing issues with IE9 on the company intranet page.  The update shows a successful install date of 2/27/13, but when i check the event logs, I see all other updates listed as installed, except for this particular update.

    You can install theInternet Explorer 10 Blocker Toolkit to make certain you don't get it unless you want it.
