How can I manually configure a COM port on Windows XP Home Edition?

Original Title: COM Port Assignments on XP SP3, Home Edition.

How can I manually configure a COM port on Windows XP Home Edition? I want to change COM13 to COM8. XP Pro allows this I think, but how can do it in my own computer at home?

Am trying to connect to MS Streets and Trips, GPS (GlobalSat BT-359)  opens on COM13 and works OK; but Streets and Trips only looks at COMports 4 and 8, so its scans do not find the GPS.

I confess I don't know if reassigning the COMPORT number will actually help.

Thanks for any advice!

Carl

    To change port settings

    1. Open Device Manager.
    2. Double-click Ports (COM & LPT).
    3. Right-click the port for which you want to change settings, and then click Properties.
    4. On the Port Settings tab, make the appropriate changes.

Thanks for this reply, but the problem is that XP Home Edition doesn't have such a tab in Device Manager. Apparently XP Professional does, but that is not available.  I posted the Question hoping somebody knows another approach. Yesterday I was given one hint to download a little virtual port management utility called XPort, and that might help. Don't know yet, but the write up ceratinly seems to be on-target:

But it certainly seems that Microsoft should have thought of this themselves!

    Hi Carl,

You may check if you are able to view the Port Settings tab in the Device Manager. If so, you can make the change there.

Refer: How to manage devices in Windows XP

    Hope the information helps.
