In need to install windows 98 on a brand new hard drive. I insert the installation disk in DVD drive and set the machine to boot from DVD drive. Nothing happens. The DVD drive works fine. I formatted the new hard drive through drive management in vista. Is it possible to install it from withing vista on the new drive? I tried to do that, but received a message saying that I should start my computer with ms dos cammand line. Does that mean ms dos command line from withing vista? What cammands should I enter to set up wondows 98 on the new drive? Thanks.

    Another also...

It's a long time ago but I think Windows 98 installation had to go via a floppy disk drive that booted with CD drivers. If it was an official set up floppy, the installation would proceed without further intervention but if it was just a basic boot floppy with CD support you had to issue dos commands to switch to the CD drive letter and then execute the setup.exe program.

Maybe some later Windows 98 CDs were directly bootable but I'm not sure about this.

    Also...

Is the new hard drive SATA or PATA. SATA isn't supported in Windows 98.

Similarly is the optical drive SATA or PATA.

Did you see a message like "hit any key to boot from CD"?

"Nothing happens" - something must happen when you turn on/boot the PC!

Have you set BIOS to boot from optical drive first?

How did you format the hard drive with regard to file system type? NTFS is not supported in Windows 98, you should use FAT32.
