Microsoft 2000 wireless keyboard issues

Hi folks, been driving myself crazy for half the day trying to resolve an issue.  Purchased new Win 8 desktop and Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 2000 and mouse combo. Christmas morning got system up and running and plugged in keyboard and mouse receiver - silky smooth, no issues though I never got around to trying to configure the function and media control keys.  Have made a couple battery changes since then.  This morning the keyboard stopped responding - flat out, no warning.  Have consulted several KBs and online sites to no avail.  Mouse works fine, keyboard detected and drivers updated, uninstalled and reinstalled at least twice - and yes, batteries changed first thing :P Even downloaded Mouse and Keyboard Center, though my keyboard is 2000, non v2 so is apparently not supported.  There is no switch on keyboard for channel, no reset button on transceiver, have moved transceiver to different USB ports etc.  Not having any luck at all. Currently have a keyboard plugged into PS2 slot. any suggestions, any experience, tips, even general commiseration would be appreciated :)

I have the same exact problem.  I have a new Windows 8 laptop and Microsoft wireless 2000 keyboard and mouse.  Both are not working and the system says device not detected.

But the link on Microsoft shows these devices should be compatible.

    Also installed the software from

    http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/d/wireless-mouse-2000

    But nothing is working.

    Any pointers.

Thanks very much for the suggestions. The Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter tells me hardware changes may have not been detected - yet the Device Manager shows "Microsoft USB Dual Receiver Wireless Keyboard" as well as the PS/2 keyboard I'm currently using) I also had attempted before posting to download and install the drivers for Win 7 as there seemed to be no option for Win 8 but they wouldn't install as there was a "later version" (I assume the Win 8 drivers) already present on the system. The KB 838398 was one of three that I worked through before posting, it unfortunately refers to buttons and channel select switches that aren't on my hardware. There were no hardware changes, no software added, and no Windows Updates downloaded in the 6-7 hours between late Friday night when the keyboard worked fine and early Saturday morning when it didn't.

I'm pretty baffled, as everything worked perfectly out of the box from about 9:00 Christmas morning until yesterday, and the mouse is still working flawlessly.  I'll continue looking for solutions online and may indeed have to contact support, but I really appreciate your suggestions!

    Hi Larry,

Thank you for posting the issue on Microsoft Community Forums.

We can imagine the inconvenience you have experienced. We will try to help you with this.

Here are a few steps which you can follow:

    Method 1:

You can try using the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter to fix the problem. It checks for common problems and makes sure that any new device or hardware connected to your PC is installed correctly.

Open the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search), entering hardware and devices in the search box, tapping or clicking Settings, and then tapping or clicking Find and fix problems with devices. You might be asked for an admin password or to confirm your choice.

    Method 2:

Refer the link below to download the keyboard drivers for Windows 7 and install in compatibility mode:

    http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/en-us/p/wireless-keyboard-2000/E6K-00001#support

Follow these steps to install the drivers in compatibility mode and check if that helps.

    a) Download the printer drivers from the manufacturer’s website.

    b) Right-click on the driver and click on ‘properties’.

    c) Click on the ‘compatibility’ tab and check the box ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’ and select Windows 7 operating system from the drop down.

    d) Click on ‘Apply’ and click ‘OK’ and run the file to install it.

    Method 3:

Also please refer the link below and perform the steps given in the article:
