Hi,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft community!

You've reached the right forum for your question. As I understand you want to set numlock key on after the computer restart.

Please go ahead and follow the methods mentioned below and later update us on the status of the issue.

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

To enable NUM LOCK before a user logs on, follow these steps:

a)       Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

b)       In the ‘Run’ windows type ’regedit’ and click ‘Ok’.

**c)**Navigate to this registry key HKEY_USERS\Default\Control Panel\Keyboard.

**d)**Right click on the “InitialKeyboardIndicators”, select Modify and change” Value data to 2”.

**e)**Restart the computer.

The issue should be fixed by now.

Hope this information is helpful and do let us know if you need further assistance. We will be glad to assist

The only way to overcome this problem is to

    a)  change the initial keyboard value in Regedit to 2147483650 (Win 8)

    b) change the power settings to uncheck Fast boot up from the control panel. (not easy to fined)

This works but the pc will take longer to boot.

Even after I edit the registry the inconvenience still persists.  Is there any other setting that could cause this?

I have an issue with the number lock but I have identified just when it occurs.

If I "restart" the computer everything is OK. BUT when I SHUTDOWN the computer and then turn the computer on (later) and attempt to sign on, I must hit the number lock key to be able to use the right keypad. After that It works fine until I turn the computer off again.

    Any recommendations??

Is there any other setting that could cause this?

Mousekeys uses it but I don't know if it changes it or prevents something else from changing it.   FWIW I run  Mousekeys when NumLock is off and leave its icon always showing in the Notification area;  so it is a convenient representation of the state of the NumLock.   To start Mousekeys you can press and hold Alt+Shift+NumLock  and then respond to the prompt.

In order to find out what is changing the state of NumLock you could try using ProcMon for its Boot Logging option, e.g. assuming that there is a registry value which makes your choice persist.
