How do I view what updates have been installed?

I have been trying to see what updates my computer has been installing. It is a Dell N5030 running Windows 7 Home Premium.  When i open the lid a message pops up in the notification area that says click to view updates that were installed, but as soon as I touch the keyboard or mouse that notification disappears.  When I expand the notification bar the message is nowhere to be found and no indication of what was updated.

Type Windows update into the start search box and press enter.

    Then select View Update History.

Does this happen every time you open the lid (which I assume on your laptop recovers from Sleep or Hibernation)? If not, then it is probably the standard message from WAU after the installation of an update.

You can check Windows Updates by typing "Windows Update" (without the quotes) and pressing Enter. In the left column click on "View update history" and click on the Date header (if it's not already sorted by date).

If it's other software/hardware updates, I believe Dell has an auto-update program, but I'm not familiar with where it would be, other than in the Start menu, probably under the Dell folder.

You can also see what (some) program updates by going to Control Panel > Programs and Features and sorting by "Installed on" date. Some programs will show an update message in the "Version" column.

Also, type "system restore" in the Search box, and look at all the restore points that have been created, Quite often, updates will create a restore point before the update/installation. That may also give you a clue as to what is going on.
