The touchpad and keyboard misbehaving a lot

I have been using Windows 8 for a long time now. Currently I am using it on a lenovo ideapad Y500. It was shipped with Window 8 Single Language but I upgraded it to Windows 8 Pro. From the pas 3 or 4 days my touchpad and keyboard are misbehaving a lot. Some times both the things freeze, doesn't allow me to do anything. Sometimes keys itself gets pressed and some random characters get printed on screen. Some times they keys don't work properly and pressing one key prints something else. Touchpad and Mouse settings go crazy too. The setting for both the buttons interchange, sometimes left click works as middle button or right click. I don't know why this is happening but it is hampering my work greatly.

To add to this, previously I used Windows 8 on a lenovo ThinkPad Edge 11 and it used to happen with that machine too, I thought this was because of machine but now this is happening to my new machine.

The PC is set for automatic update system and Windows Defender also didn't catch any malicious thing too.

    Hello Imran!

Thanks for your reply. I am sorry for delayed reply.

I have done all these things and could not get anything in good shape.

In the mean time I have also been in touch with lenovo support. The person there told me that this specific laptop model is getting such errors but there is no perfect solution available for this as of now. Though he gave me a solution which has so far brought down the anomaly of keyboard and mouse to maximum of once or twice a day.

The reason for this problem is some lenovo software and drivers. Trick is to:

    1. Boot the system in clean boot mode and disable all services other thatn MS services.
    2. Remove the driver for touchpad and keyboard.
    3. Remove "lenovo energy management soultions".
    4. Reboot the system.
    5. Install "Lenovo Energy Management Solutions".
    6. Now install the drivers for keyboard and touchpad.
    7. Boot the system in normal mode.

This process has resolved the issue as of now.

    Thanks.

    Hello Mary!

Its not just with touchpad, its with both keyboard and mouse/touchpad. and I am not brushing the touchpad. Its not happening when on my ThinkPad I reverted back to Windows 7 but when again I came on Windows 8 this thing is happening.

Thanks for the reply, but I have already don all this. Once again I tried all three methods mentioned. Its not only the problem with touchpad or mouse, its happening with both of them. And keyboard too, keyboard itself type some characters on the screen. Which I don't know why? Sometimes the layout of keys gets corrupted, for example right now when I am pressing 4 on the numpad its working is down arrow, not even as left arrow but down arrow. and its happening a lot. It used to happen the same way on ThinkPad too.

Sounds like you are inadvertently hitting or brushing the touchpad when typing on the keyboard. Look for a setting to turn off the touchpad when using the keyboard. Also reduce the sensitivity setting on the touchpad. Lenovo should help you with this. Check their support site for instructions on how to change the settigs.

    Hi Nitish,

To find the root cause of this issue and to resolve it, please follow the steps given below:

Method 1: Disconnect any external pointing device from the computer and then check the issue.

If you have any external pointing device connected with the computer, then I would suggest you to disconnect it and then try installing the latest touchpad drivers.

**Method 2:**I would suggest you to run “Hardware and Devices” troubleshooter to diagnose the exact issue.

Follow these steps to run the troubleshooter:

    a.       Press “Windows key + W”.

    b.      Type “Troubleshooting” without quotes in the Search box and hit enter.

    c.       Select “Hardware and Sound” from the Troubleshooter Window.

    d.      Select “Hardware and Devices” under Devices option.

    e.      Follow the On Screen instructions.

Method 3: Uninstall and reinstall touch pad drivers from the manufacturer’s website and see if that helps:

Step 1: Uninstall the drivers the touchpad drivers:

    Follow these steps:

    a.       Press “Windows Key + W” from the keyboard.

    b.      Type “Device Manager” without quotes in the search box and hit enter.

    c.       Right click on the touchpad drivers and select “Uninstall”.

    d.      Restart the computer once it is uninstalled.

Step 2: Download the latest touchpad drivers for “Windows 8” from manufacturer’s website.
