I have a HP Notebook,   installed with,  Windows 7 64 bit, Home Basic version.

When I type, service msc on the  search box, even as  an Administrator, and I click Yes  to UAC it refuses to open. I understand that Group Policy editor is not available on Home Basic. Please let me know, if the same applies to Services mse or there is a problem with my Laptop ?Fearing that my Laptop is  infected with  Virus, I have scanned with  " Microsoft Security Scanner ",  and  I have " Microsoft Security essentials " installed which keeps on  updating and  scanning on a daily basis. All other functions such as, Task Manager, Event Viewer, Component Services and  Services are working  all right. When I right click on services msc > open  file location, it  directs me toC:\ Windows\System32 \ Services and on double  clicking it, it refuses to open.  Your help will be appreciated in this matter. Very modestly put,  I am not very versatile on the Computer

    Hello  Vikrant,

Thanks  for your response. As advised, I had run sfc/scannow and got the result as " Windows Resource Protection did not find any  integrity  violations "

Going through certain  blogs,  I noticed that instead of  typing out " services.msc ", all this time I was typing " services msc " ..... without the  dot in between. As a result i had this problem.

Now when I type " services.msc "  [ the correct way ] I am  directed to  the services  console listing all the services.

Call it my ignorance,   but I must appreciate all  your efforts to resolve my issue Thank you so much.

    Rajdeep

    Hello Vikrant,

Thank you for the quick response. To answer your questions first.

    1. I do not get  any specific  error message when  I try to open Services msc. There  is simply no response.
    2. I  try to open  Services msc by  clicking the  start  button and typing " services msc " [ without  quotes ofcourse ].  It  does  appear alone and right on top . If I  hover my mouse I get a  grey box  information for a  second saying.... File Description ~ Services and Controller App. Company ~ Microsoft Corpn. File Version ~ 6.1..7600.16385. Date created ~ etc, etc.
    3. I went into Recovery Mode on the 24th of April, primarily  to  set my Registry in order which had been tampered  using  a third party app. Thereafter  I  have backed up my registry to be on the safe side.Ever since  the Recovery, I have not   meddled with  the Registry.Following  recovery, I have  made  changes in the Services and  uninstalled  certain HP Programmes,  which I actually don't require]. The list of both are available with me.Since  I hardly opened Services msc, it is  difficult to know, what  changes  I made  to trigger the sudden disappearance of this App.

I must hasten to add that  I have a total of  264  Errors and Warnings as reflected  in Administrative Events.

In the mean time as  suggested  I am  going ahead with  Methods 1 and 2 to  resolve the issue.

I would appreciate if you let me know if there is anything else  I should do.

    Rajdeep.

    Hi Rajdeep,

To help you better please answer these questions.

    1.      Do you get any specific error message?

    2.      How are you trying to open the services.msc?

    3.      Were there any changes made on the computer prior to the issue?

I would suggest you to follow the methods provided to fix the issue.

Method 1: Check in Safe Mode.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows7/start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

    Method 2: Run the SFC\SCANNOW:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

Note: The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Method 3: Check Event Viewer for detailed error report.

    Open Event Viewer

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows7/open-event-viewer

If you need any further assistance related with the Windows Operating System, please reply and we will be happy to help you.
