I am running OS Windows XP SP3. For the past several days I have had an issue when trying to open Internet Explorer. Microsoft Updates or anything Microsoft. Right now I am using Google Chrome from the very same computer I'm having the Microsoft issues with even to send this message. Anyway, whenever I try to open IE I get an error message box that says:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error

Program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplorer.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusaul way.

Please contact the application's support team for more information.

In my Add/Remove Programs there are several Microsoft Visual C++ applications. They are listed as follows:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 ATL Update kb973923-x86 8.0.50727.4053   Size 0.11MB

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable  Size 5.28MB

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable - Size 5.07MB

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.4148  Size 10.19MB

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.6161   Size 10.20MB

Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable - 10.0.40219  Size 14.97MB

Can anyone help me resolve this issue. I have read some suggestions to reinstall the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. But which one? And will that resolve the problem?  HELP!!

    Hi Will,

    To help you suggest more steps to resolve the issue, I would appreciate it if you could answer the following question:

    Have you made any recent hardware or software changes to your computer prior to the issue?

    Please follow the methods and check the issue:

    **Method 1:**If the issue is caused due to missing Visual C++ libraries, you may download and install the Runtime components of Visual C++ libraries from the link below:

    You can uninstall any existing Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package and install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package to check if it helps.

    Step 1: To uninstall the package:

    a.       Open Programs and Features.

    b.      From the list, find Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package and click on it.

    c.       Click Uninstall at the top of the list.

    Step 2: Download and install the latest package to see if it helps.

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86)

    **http://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=5555**

    Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x64)

    **http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=14632**

    Note: Install anyone as per the Operating System installed on your computer.

    Method 2: As the issue occurs while launching Internet Explorer, you may run the Microsoft Fixit and check if that works.

    Fix Internet Explorer issues to make IE fast, safe and stable

    Method 3: I would suggest you to perform clean boot and check if the issue still persists.

    You may configure the computer in clean boot and check if the issue persists. It will start Windows XP by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs and helps to eliminate software conflicts.

    You may refer to the link:

    How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state

    **http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353**

    If the issue does not persist you may continue with step 2 from the above link.

    Make sure you reset the computer to normal mode after the troubleshooting completes. Refer to the section “Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state”

    Hope this helps.

    Thank You, Thank You! Your suggestion to download the Microsoft Fix It seems to have solve my problem. I ran the trouble shooter for the IE performance and safety and wah la I am able to open IE with no problem.

    I did have one mishap downloading the Fix It Center. During the installation of the trouble shooters I got a message that not all trouble shooters installed successfully and I could retry downloading the application. That was followed by an error message box that said:

    Microsoft Fix it Center

    Microsoft fix it Center has encountered an unexpected error, please try again. Error code: 16977924-2147024774.

    I don't know what that means especially since my problem seems to be resolved. It appears my problem stemmed from IE addons.

    Can someone contact me to explain what this Microsoft Fix It Center error message means? Do I have to uninstall the Fix it Center and reinstall it?
