Keyboard types in CAPS with CAPS lock OFF and vice versa - with laptop and external keyboard and even the onscreen keyboard

Over night, something has happened to the way Windows 8 reads the keyboard input.  No matter whether I use the laptop keyboard, the external wireless keyboard or the onscreen pop up keyboard, the results are the same.

If CAPS lock is OFF, the input shows up as CAPS.

If CAPS lock is ON, the input shows up in lowercase

Regardless of CAPS status, numberic input is impossible, either from the upper row of keys OR the number pad (with num lock on or off).

This makes it impossible to log in to the computer as there are numbers in the password.

The laptop is an ASUS (sorry, don't know the model and it's home right now while I'm at work), bought within the last 2 months.  Everything was working fine yesterday.

Any help greatly appreciated!

    Fixed!  Here is the solution:

    "Pressing the right shift key for 8 seconds in Word 2003is a short cut to FilterKeys. When you hit cancel though it changes the configuration of the keyboard. When you hit a letter key you will get capitals even though you did not engage the capital lock key. When you hit a number key you will get the symbol above that key as if you had hit the shift key with it.

    To correct this problem and revert back to Words normal default mode

    Press both SHIFT KEYS at the same time. This will cancel the change in the keyboard configuration.

    To cancel the Shift Key short cut so that this problem does not occur again

                *   Hold down RIGHT SHIFT KEY for 8 seconds to bring up FilterKey popup

                *   Click on SETTINGS

                *   Under the Keyboard tab go to Filter Keys and click on SETTINGS

                *   Under Keyboard Shortcut click on the box USE SHORTCUT to remove check

                     mark

                *   Click OK

                *   At the bottom of the Accessibility Options box click APPLY then OK.

                *   Press both SHIFT KEYS to deactivate changes.

    Keyboard should now return to normal mode and if you hold down shift key for 8 seconds or more you should never have this problem again."

    I also had this problem on a Toshiba Laptop with Windows 8.1. I had put the computer to sleep, and when I woke it up, the caps lock was reversed.

    Filter Keys and Sticky keys were already off.

    I found the solution on another website- hold down both Shift keys for a few seconds. No idea why it worked, but it did! My keyboard is back to normal.

    This just happened to me for the first time.  I did it to myself by mis-hitting some key while I was typing.  I type fast using touch.  Though experimentation I found how to turn it off.  I am using Windows 8.1 and I am on a PC not a laptop.  To have the keyboard go back so that CAPS are off when they are suppose to be off hit the "caps lock" key and the windows key at the same time.

    this could be a word problem encountered when you use an old document that was formatted. in my case i cleared an old document so as to keep the headings then started typing my new information. the issue with the cap locks then arose.

    the IT Guy in my office instructed as follows:

    • look for the clear formatting icon in your word document at the top just above the icon for upper case, lower case, sentence case, etc.
    • click this icon to clear formatting
    • move your cursor to the styles banner at the right of the borders icon.
    • click on the first box:-normal

    hope this solves your problem.

    First open search ( by moving your mouse to the right hand corner in win 8 ) and type filter keys ,go to the filter key and on it and then off ..............

    it went off this way for me.
