Feedback from Built-In Microphone

Hello.  When I enable my built-in microphone, I get a varying feedback tone.  As soon as I plug in an external microphone, the sound goes away, and I can use the external microphone to communicate.  As soon as I unplug the microphone, the sound returns on the built-in speaker.  I am using a laptop as my computer.  When I use a headset and an external microphone, I have no problems.  I am willing to settle for this, and maybe there is no solution as this may be an inherent problem, but it would be nice to know if there was a permanent solution other than disabling my speakers and using a headset.  I've tried combinations of settings to no avail.  It may be that there is an obvious solution, but my computer "savviness" is not very high, in other words, I consider myself a basic computer user, IE. "entry level".  Please reply at your earliest convenience.  With gratitude, MH.

Feedback sounds are generally an indication of the mic being set to a high gain amplification level.  They can also indicate a malfunction but that seems less likely unless somebody has been poking needles into it.

Go to Control panel, Sound & then the Recording tab.

Select the internal mic & select Properties.

Select the Levels tab & lower the amplification of the mic & any other indicators there [such as, just for example as it's on mine, mic boost level].  Take then all down to say 25% or even lower to 0% & see if the feedback sound disappears.

If it does fix it then you can play around with the setting to find a happy medium.  Whilst doing this, you might find that your sound card itself has some useful functions in addition to those in the dialog I just took you to - my sound card control is within Control panel, IDT audio control panel & also within Start menu programs, Creative Soundblaster.

If this does not fix it then I'd say the mic is defective.
