UAC stops program from showing mapped drives

I have (2) workstations with fresh installs of Win7 Pro..

I have mapped 2 drives on a Server 2012 Essentials Server..

Users on wrkstn's have admin privileges, and have no problem opening mapped drives with UAC turned on..

But when I attempt to install Notesmith (mortgage program), it asked where the data is, and displays a "Select Drive" box, with all local drives shown, but no mapped drives..

The only way I can see the mapped drives in the "Select Drive" box, is by disabling UAC totally...

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening???

Appreciate any input...

TIA...

The elevated user cannot see drives mapped by the unelevated user. When you disable UAC, you're running like Windows XP with only one logon session.

You can try mapping the drives in an elevated command prompt and see if Notesmith can see them.

I assume you only need to do this to install and afterwards it will run as a standard user.

Thanks so much for the link, it definitely explains why I'm experiencing the issue, although I'm still confused as to how I'm expected to install the program from the user account w/o elevated privileges? Will have to setup a testbench workstation and see if I can figure a workaround to this issue, as I certainly don't like having UAC turned off..

    Again thanks...

As I previously mentioned, the only way I can access the mapped drives in Notesmith is by disabling UAC..

I have contacted Notesmith and they responded by telling me that an Administrator will NOT see a user's mapped drives, which, I assume, is not the same as a user, with elevated privileges, but I'm not sure...

Is there a way to modify UAC to treat individual programs differently??

Anyway, appreciate the help.. Will report back after I hear from Notesmith on my reply...

An Administrator account has two logon sessions. Normally they run in a session that only has standard user privileges. When they need administrator privileges, when installing a program, for example, you get a UAC prompt (depending on the level set) and switch into the session with administrator privileges. Mapped drives are only associated with the session they are created in. So, when there is a switch to the elevated session, the mapped drives are no longer visible.

Aaron Margosis demonstrates this about 53 minutes into this presentation.

You might want to back off to 48 minutes if you are not familiar with the concepts.

    Hi,

Are you able to access the mapped drives from the specific program that you have mentioned?

It looks like the particular program cannot access the mapped drives. You may have to set permission or add rules to the program to access network drives. I would suggest you to contact program administrator for further assistance.
