Windows Explorer Crash (fault module is "thumbcache.dll")

Hello,

I have been using Windows 8 Pro for a few months. I am facing an "explorer crash" since when I restricted deleting thumbnail cache for faster folder loading. I did it by adding a "deny" permission(delete subfolders and files, delete) in the security option of the folder C:\Users\User_Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer. This worked fine in my previous Windows 7 Ultimate. But in Window 8 Pro it causing an Explorer Crash as soon as the "ThumbcacheToDelete" folder is created inside the Explorer folder. Report of crash is added below.

Thank you in advance for any kind of help.

I have added an extra deny permission to the folder "C:\Users\User_Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer" to prevent deletion of the thumbnail cache for faster folder loading. It worked fine in windows 7 Ultimate but [it's] causing Explorer crash in Windows 8 Pro...

Patient (demonstrating): "Doctor, it hurts when I do this!"

        Doctor: "Don't do that."

If you remove the "extra deny permission" and reboot, does the behavior persist?

    Hi Mr. Imran M,

Thank you for your response. First answering your questions,

    1. I do not see any message at the time of crash, just all the desktop icons goes away and comeback after a while. From the event log viewer I've got this,

Faulting application name: Explorer.EXE, version: 6.2.9200.16384, time stamp: 0x50107d1c

Faulting module name: thumbcache.dll, version: 6.2.9200.16384, time stamp: 0x501080dd

    Exception code: 0xc0000005

    Fault offset: 0x00020500

    Faulting process ID: 0x80c

    Faulting application start time: 0x01ce5306e3738c1f

    Faulting application path: C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE

    Faulting module path: C:\Windows\System32\thumbcache.dll

    Report ID: 7b66d3b0-bf04-11e2-afa8-20107ab0ee57

    Faulting package full name:

Faulting package-relative application ID: 2. I'm using the built in Administrator account. 3. As I mentioned in my question earlier, I have added an extra deny permission to the folder "C:\Users\User_Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer" to prevent deletion of the thumbnail cache for faster folder loading. It worked fine in windows 7 Ultimate but causing Explorer crash in Windows 8 Pro as soon as the "ThumbcacheToDelete" folder is created into the Explorer folder. I've added a few screen shots. You kindly check that out.

I have applied your methods. It remains the same. If there any way to stop the deletion of the thumbnail cache other than this please let me know.

Thanks a lot for your help.

    Hi Md. Mahfuzur Rahman,

In order to provide you with a quick resolution, please reply to these questions:

    1.       Do you receive any error message or error code?

    2.       Are you the administrator of the computer?

    3.       Have you made any changes on the computer prior to the issue?

**Method 1:**Run system maintenance troubleshooter and check.

    a.       Press Windows Key +R, type Control Panel.

    b.      Type troubleshooting in the search bar, click on troubleshooting.

    c.       Click on System and Security, click on System Maintenance.

    d.      Follow the steps from the wizard to run the troubleshooter.

**Method 2:**If the above method does not help then follow these steps:

**Step 1:**Boot to safe mode and check if the issue persists. Follow the steps to boot to safe mode:

    a.       Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

    b.      In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.

    c.       Click the ‘Boot’ tab.

    d.      Under ‘Boot Options’, select the ‘Safe Boot’ option.

    e.       Choose the type of safe mode by selecting one of the options below the Safe boot check box.

    f.       Select ‘Minimal’ and click OK and then restart your PC.

Step2: If the issue does not persist in Safe Mode then the issue may be due to some third party Program/application. To determine which program or application is causing the issue, try placing the computer in clean boot state and check.

Place the computer in a clean boot state and then check if it helps. You can start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.
