    Hi Scott,

This issue could be caused if the device drivers were not installed properly or if the driver files are corrupted. I would suggest you to try these steps and check:

    Method 1:

You have mentioned that the driver installation program didn’t work. This could be caused if the driver file is corrupted or damaged or if you didn’t install it the right way. To make sure that you have a working version of the driver, select Windows 8 as the operating system and download the driver files from this link:

    http://www.lg.com/us/support-product/lg-GP40NB40#

Once you have downloaded the driver files, click on the “view more” option below the download link and follow the exact procedure suggested there to install the driver.

    Method 2:

If the above steps didn’t help, then I would suggest you to run the hardware and devices troubleshooter and check.  This built-in troubleshooter can detect and fix most of the errors related to devices. Refer to these steps:

    a)      Press Windows key +X, select Control panel.

    b)      Change the view by option on the top right to Large icons.

    c)       Click on troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel.

    d)      Run the “Hardware and devices” troubleshooter.

You can also refer to this link for more information:

Hope this helps. Please get back to us with the results if you need any further assistance.

    Hi,

There is a problem with one of the features in iTunes that can cause this problem...

The solution is to in stall the newest "GEAR" drivers... There are others as well.

    http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.php

You can look in the registry for UPPER and LOWER FILTERS at this key...

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

The filters will be listed on the right side after clinking on the key...

Anything listed there is a potential problem, but all filters don't cause a problem...only some...

Deleting the filter will usually fix the problem, but may cause one of your programs to not work properly...

You can usually do a Bing or Google search for the file in the filter, and identify which program it goes with...

Then try updating the program... As a last resort, delete it...

    ALSO...

If the drive doesn't even show up in Device Manager, then you need to try this...

    1. Run Command Prompt as an Administrator. Hover your pointer over the lower left corner, and right click when "Start" pops up. It will be on the list that opens.
    2. Type or Copy and Paste following and hit enter

    reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

    1. Type Exit and hit Enter
    2. Reboot the system.

I had the same problem with the LG40NB40 DVD writer connecting to a Lenovo Ultrabook using Windows 8,  would not see it. I then saw where it had a TV mode so having nothing to lose I plugged it into the Lenovo and had a power light blink. following the instructions to switch to TV mode ... "With DVD drawer open, hold eject button on front for two seconds and the light will stay on". After doing this, I switched it back to DVD mode, using the same method from above, and it was instantly recognized.

    Give it a try ...

    Hi,

There really isn't anything special about hooking up an external USB CD\DVD drive....

There is no software to install unless you get some kind of backup or video program with it...

It may be a LightScribe drive that requires software to make a lightscribe disk, but you don't have to install it... LightScribe is the feature that will burn a "Picture" to the LABEL side of a special disk, but has nothing to do with burning the actual data\video\music part of the disk...

It is possible that you may need to temporarily disable a security program to hook it up the first time, but that's doubtful....

There is nothing different about a external DVD than a internal one except for the USB plug(s)....

Updating the firmware is no big deal... a lot of the better CD\DVD drives have updateable firmware, and it is an advantage, not a curse... For one thing, it allows the manufacturer to update the "Burn Routines" for newer types of discs, which improves the quality of the burn...

I took a look at your model, and the only thing I notice is that it gets it's power from a 2nd USB connection... I personally don't like that, but most all of the portable 2.5 inch hard drives work the same way...

I also recently purchased an HP Sleekbook (which eliminates the CD/DVD writer.)  I got mine at Best Buy.  It runs Windows 8.  The sales person suggested I purchase an "external" CD/DVD drive and the LG GP40 was only $40 so I took his suggestion and got one.  I got the one he picked up as they are all virtually the same in terms of function.  This was mid September.  I took the drive out of the box and was going to install it when I first got my laptop but it looked a little involved so I put the drive back in the box and have procrastinated on installing it as I've not needed it until this Friday.  As everything is different with Windows 8 I thought I should make an exception to my normal routine of "install first and read directions later" and in reading I saw no mention of it being compatible with Windows 8 (which should have been discovered by the guy at Best Buy but he didn't) so I pulled up the LG website and researched this GP40.  Anyone thinking of using this GP40 should read that LG article first as there is a problem with the compatibility of this dive (GP40) and Windows 8.  LG says I need to disable the anti-virus system and several other operations going on in the background on my machine before I install it and as part of that process I have to go to their website and download a revised "firmwear" and "driver" update.

This sounds akin to using bubblegum and duct tape to fix a problem on a new car's motor.  I called our local Best Buy and they said I had 15 days from purchase date to return the drive and I'm past that.  I suppose I could go to the store and pitch a fit and cry to the manager that they should make an exception in this case and take my GP40 back and refund me so I can buy one from them that's compatible with Windows 8 but I'm not going to.  Instead, I'm going to Office Max or WalMart and get another one that will work with my laptop.  I spent 1000.00 on this machine and supporting software/hardware and another 200.00 on extended warrantee and I don't want to use the advice of LG and half-a_ _ install something that will end up (likely) costing me more time and $ to fix when the thing screws up.

Nope, Best Buy can keep their $40.00 and I'll use the GP40 in the box for target practice as there are some circles on the front of the box that vary in size which will test my skill so the $40.00 did buy some "functionality."  I would like to say I'll not buy anything else from Best Buy but I know that would not be true as I don't have enough $ to make a stand on principal and I know there will be something else in the future they will have that I need and they will have the best price.  However, I will continue to "shop" prices and if any future purchases are close in terms of price, they will be my last resort.  So, if you got one of these for a machine that runs Windows 8 I suggest you return it promptly and read the fine print on the next one and "trust but verify" what the folks at Best Buy tell you.
