How do you fix Error code 0x80070057

Trouble shooting History shows:

Package:       Unknown

Path:             Unknown

Error code:    0x80070057

Source:         Command Line

Context:        Elevated

This information is repeated under umpteen different hadings, viz: Windows Network Diagnostics, Internet Explorer Safety, System Maintenance, Performance, Windows Update, Printer, Internet Connections, etc!!

This error has appeared at least 20 times since 14 April 2013, in spite of efforts to go back to restore points, it returns.

In performing a recovery, the following is displayed:

  Problem Event Name:  BlueScreen

  OS Version:                 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1

  Locale ID:                    2057

Additional information about the problem

Computer is a Dell 9200 (DXP061)  BIOS Version 1.0.3 (08/14/06)  running Windows 7. upgraded from Windows XP.
