No ati Graphics driver is installed and nothing in device manager folder

Hi there,

I have recently been getting the following error message on start up each day:

"There is no ATI graphics driver installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning.

Please install the ATI driver appropriate for your hardware".

Additionally, whilst trying to solve this problem, I have discovered that the Device Manager folder is completely blank.

I am using a Dell Inspiron 570 Desktop machine with an Athlon 630 processor, video card is a Radeon HD 4200

It says it has the Catalyst Control Center installed accodring to the "All Programs" list but it does not show up in the Control Panel and it cannot be opened.

I have tried downloading various drivers from the Dell support site but they do not seem to install properly.

In the case of the (empty) Device Manager, I have created a new user account to see if the problem also occurs with the new account and have found that the Device Manager is also empty in the New User account.

After my return from a short break, I intend to try and download the Catalyst Control Center as a package direct from the AMD site and see if that helps.

In the meantime, any advice that anyone cares to offer would be most welcome,

back in three days,

Regards

Gordon

How does this pertain to Windows Update functionality, Gordon?

By any chance did you recently install/upgrade to IE10?

    Hi there, (PA Bear)

    Thanks for quick reply.

Windows Update seems to be functioning okay.

I have Update set to advise me when updates are available and the last one was successfully installed just a couple of days ago (after this problem reared it's head).

Windows update offered me the opportunity to install IE10 (as an important update) some time ago. I chose not install it and am still using IE9.

IE10 is currently on my "Hidden" List and is presumably still available

Would my decision not to install IE10 have anything to do with my current problem??.

As previously stated, I am away for a few days from today so If I do not answer any further suggestions immediately, I am not being rude I assure you.

I appreciate all assistance by anyone who cares to offer it.

    Best regards,

    Gordon

Would my decision not to install IE10 (i.e., hide it) have anything to do with my current problem?

I'd very much doubt it - unless Update for Win7 (KB2670838) is listed in Installed Updates.

May I ask why you decided to post about this problem in the Windows Update forum (versus, e.g., the Hardware & Drivers forum)?

    Hi again Pa Bear,

Thanks for your reply, I cannot find any sign of the afore mentioned update listed in "installed updates".

Regarding your other query, I am new to this forum and clearly selected the wrong forum in error.

I will try re posting this query int the correct forum,

    Thanks for your replies,

    Goordon
