how to save a file from windows movie maker in any other format except .wlmp

I am unable to save a file as anything other than a .wlmp, which no other program ever will open, so obviously, this does me no good. I have tried downlaoding programs to convert my useless .wlmp to any other file, but the conversion programs I download won't even open the file. I have been told to export my file from windows movie maker to another file, but there is no export option on my windows movie maker. there is only save and save as, and they do not allow any other file type.

 I have not made a movie before, but I have been trying to figure this out for days and have found no posts telling me how to solve this problem.  Is this a problem with movie maker? Is there some update I need?

This is an assignment for school that was due last week, so prompt help is greatly greatly appreciated. I called and talked to microsoft support, only to be informed that they do not offer on the phone support fot this program. Please Please help!

    As noted, please look lower in the File menu for a Save movie option rather than the Save project options.  While you do want your project file saved (so you could possibly return to make more edits in your project), its the movie that is your final product.  It's kind of like the difference between saving your Word document and the final printing to paper.  They are two separate choices in the menu.

    .WLMP files are project files (not video files) that contain all the editing and composition information for your movie - they will not usually be recognised outside of Movie Maker.

    Firstly save your .WLMP project somewhere.

    Second, assuming you are using Windows Live Movie Maker, click on the downward pointing arrow (top-left of screen) then select Save Movie followed by your choice of what its going to be used for. In the dialog box that then appears type in a filename and immediately underneath select either .WMV or .MP4 video file format. Movie Maker will then render your movie which may take some considerable time depending on the length & resolution of the movie and the speed of your PC's hardware. At the end you will have a video file that you can play and convert elsewhere pretty readily.

    @Noel,

    I answered your question on this same topic.  In short, you need to choose the Save movie option, not the Save project choice.

    Here's a screenshot that should make it clear.

    Hi Noel,

    We are glad to assist you in your concern. I understand that you are having a problem saving the project properly as WMV.

    Like what Jetta and considerate_guy said, your project can be saved as WMV or MP4 by using the Save movie options, and not the Save project function. You don't need to download any other program if you are already using Windows Movie Maker. Once you select Save Movie, there will be another set of options on how you would like to save the movie, like Recommended for this project, For computer, For email, etc.

    If in case you are still having a problem, can you please provide us what are the available options on the File menu (the one that contains the Save project, New project, etc.)?

    We appreciate your response.

    Thanks!
