How do I stop Windows Photo Gallery from duplicating multiple copies of the same photo?

Evertime I try to edit or copy a picture to another folder, Windows Photo Gallery automatically copies it in the Libraries...i have multiple images of the same photo and I want to know how to stop this automatic copying.

It also copies it to Windows when i open another photo program so I consume any where between 2-10 copies of the same folder.

When I edit photos, I want the ability to copy the photo myself in its original form and edited copy but not so many copies if the same photo.

I am having this same problem, and it is eating up my memory big time. I should have somewhere around 2000 photos, but the actual count is fast approaching 30,000. No matter how  I add photos to my collection, I will inevitably get from 1 to 10 copies! Also, about 75% of the time they generate a "shortcut" & icon on my desk top. If I painstakingly delete the excess copies, they will reappear within a few days. Usually, if I delete the desktop copy, it will COMPLETELY remove the photo from the computer. PapaTang

This didn't even answer the problem. I've been getting 3-5 duplicates of photos & I didn't even make a copy of the photo. Would appreciate a useful reply related to the problem.

Up to about 6 months ago when I downloaded Photo's from my camera card into my computer it would

automatically only take the photo's which I had not downloaded before but now it download the whole

lot starting again at No 1. If I had 300 Photo's on my card and say I downloaded 100 a month ago it used

to take 200 with the next download but it now take the whole 300 again. Any suggestions, as far as I know

I have not changed anything. Thanks for advice.

Well you could clean the card after a successful import seems the best way to solve the issue

It's either that or copy and paste the files into the same folder every time that way you will be prompted what you want to do when the same file exists in the folder = select Skip and check the box to apply the same to the others found.
