Original title: Generic Non-pnp on 2nd monitor

  • 2 Monitors.............Left(23 1/2")..........Right (21 1/2")
  • ........................................DYNEX.......AOC ENVISION series
  • Both usually run on 1920 x 1080
  • Using ATI Radeon HD 5700 series
  • Both using converted VGA adapters
  1. Turn on computer one day and resolution is all screwed up after using an Xbox on the AOC(AV cords since HDMI wont transfer sound for me) <---- might be relevant
  2. Can not fix resolution from VGA resolution(?) (1600 x 900, 1440 x 900...) due to Generic Non-pnp Monitor.
  3. System Restore - nothing
  4. Switch drivers around using the AVG, and other Radeon versions. - nothing but screwed up resolution
  5. Re-Plug - nothing
  6. Defrag (desperate after 4 hours) - nothing
  7. Restart for the 100th time
  8. The computer stops at the "Windows Starting" screen and stops part way through safe mode.
  9. F8 F8 F8 F8 F8
  10. "Fix Computer" - nothing
  11. Connect to computer through tablet and update all drivers - back to step 2 this time ti sometimes shows Generic Non-pnp Monitor and sometimes shows Display device on: Mobile PC Display even though my 2nd monitor is displaying and able to react to everything i put on it.

AOC Monitor is shifted 3/4" up (black margin on the bottom) and an uncertain amount to the left (no margin on the right).

trying to be as helpful as possible I have a lot of work to do and CS work is almost impossible for me without 2 working monitors please help, thank you.

UPDATE!: I got no sound.

    Mike,

Disable the LogMeIn driver from device manager and check. There are some issues reported where LogMeIn driver has disabled the aero feature as well as changed the screen resolution.

    • Click on start and then type device manager and press enter.
    • Double click the display adapters to expand the video drivers.
    • Right click on LogMeIn mirror driver and then click on disable.
    • Restart the computer and see if that helps.

You may try uninstalling the video drivers and then install the driver from the AMD website as given in my first reply.

Note: there is no harm uninstalling the video driver. When the video driver is uninstalled, Windows will boot with the minimum VGA drivers. The screen resolution(icons on the screen) might look bigger but after installing the latest video drivers, the screen resolution will be back to normal.

Please do try these steps and reply us the results.

    Hi Kevin

I have a similar problem, intermittently. (Though in my case the generic non-PnP driver does offer 1920 X 1080, it just sends it out with the wrong timing.)

If the monitor is not picked up by PnP, then there is nothing that can be achieved by manually installing the correct driver.  If PnP has succeeded, Moninfo shows the correct Display-ID as 'registry-active'. If PnP has failed then there is no 'registry-active' monitor either before or after you have manually installed the correct driver, and the wrong timing persists.

I think you are on the right track when you mention disconnecting power to the monitor. But VGA is not aware of whether there is power to the monitor or not. Which raises the question, how does Plug and Play work over VGA? Is it powered through the VGA cable? Because an [external] monitor is installed immediately you plug the VGA cable into the [laptop], even when there is no power to the external monitor.

Still having a problem. I Just gave up with Microsoft support, sorry Kevin I tried everything suggested. Thank you for your time, I hope all this helps someone else though. I'm going to consider either a new brand of video card or new cables.

After unplugging and plugging the cord back into the back of my 2nd screen it still came back at 1440 x 900

I Uninstalled the driver and my screen, once again, stalled at the windows starting screen while i had to access my computer from my tablet again and re-install the drivers again just to come back to a 1440 x 900 screen.

Could the problem be with LogMeIn, the app i use to access my tablet? Under Display Adapters I now have ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series AND LogMeIn Mirror Driver. I'm afraid to uninstall both drivers because IF I get stuck at the "Starting Windows" screen again I will have no way of re-installing the drivers.

Is my LogMeIn driver the problem?

Thank you very much for your help, I usually just google/bing(for Microsoft's sake)****for solutions and hope people will be able to google/bing this solution if/when they have this issue, You're awesome!

    Hey Mike,

Unplugging and replugging the power supply to the monitors is the most common fix that has been worked for many users with this issue. You may give it a try.

Un-installing the Video drivers(ATI Radeon HD 5700) and then re-installing the latest drivers from device manufacturer website can be of help.

    a. Click on start and then type DEVMGMT.MSC in the startup search box and press enter.

    b.      Click the arrow before Display Adapters, Right click on the Video Driver and then click on Uninstall.

    c.       You may be prompted to uninstall the driver software, please place a check mark so that the driver is completed removed from the system.

    d.      Restart the computer.

Download the driver from http://www.amd.com/us/products/notebook/graphics/ati-mobility-hd-5700/Pages/ati-mobility-hd-5700.aspx based on the computer system type(32 bit or 64bit)

If this doesn't help, you may always set up dual monitors once again by following these links.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976064/en-gb

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/work-and-play-better-with-multiple-monitors#section_1

For changing the screen resoultion, http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows7/change-your-screen-resolution

For the Sound issues, here's a Microsoft help article which might help you.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows/no-sound-help#no-sound=windows-7&v1h=win8tab1&v2h=win7tab1&v3h=winvistatab1&v4h=winxptab1

Note: Download and install the hardware drivers from the computer manufacturer or device manufacturer's website and not through the Windows updates as it provides the generic drivers.

Let us know if these methods help you.
