Hi

Model No- HP Pavilion Slimline s3760in Desktop PC. Refer to the link: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategor

Computer came with pre-installed Vista Home Premium 32-bit and recently did clean installation of windows 7 professional 32-bit.

My PC was not in use for more than 3months and when i turned on i get message on screen

ST3320813AS: Hard disk failure is imminent.

Please backup your hard disk and have it replaced !

Press <F10> for Setup, <F2> to continue

If you enter setup and go to S.M.A.R.T check and when u scan for SMART Short Self Test and SMART Extended Self Test message displays

Test finished Failed.

SMART Self Test Status Value - 4 (Completed the test, but the failed element unknown)

Test finished Failed.

SMART Extended Self Test Status Value - 4 (Completed the test, but the failed element unknown)

Few days back i have installed  AVG PC tuner 2012 and when i scan for Hard disk Health it showed some error in reading and writing. i am not sure about it because cant remember exactly.

Scanned full hard disk for Error-checking the drive for errors and check "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" but dint find any bad sectors and system errors.

i had run SeaTools for Windows application from Seagate and it says important firmware update is available as i am having recent firmware revision HP2A for model number ST3320813AS

So my doubt is that

1] shall i proceed with this firmware update "Download Firmware Update Utility BR-SD2B.exe" from this link http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/20

2] will there be any problem after updating this firmware?

3] how to fix this SMART hard disk failure problem?

Please provide the solution as soon as possible.

Now Bootmgr is missing

Not the case that it is failing.

I have an HP Pavillion with two similar drives. I have had it for a few years now.

Almost immediately after I got it, this error started appearing. It is a glitch in the HP and there is a patch for it on Windows Vista. I just found out recently that this is a known problem with HP and it is not a problem with the disk.

I have been operating with this disk in that mode forever, with no loss at all.

Unfortunately, I have updated the operating system to windows 7 and the patch that HP has only works on Vista.

I would try what Seagate has.

Currently as we speak I am running Seagate's SeaTools for Windows to check the drive. I doubt I will find anything.

The SMART hard drive failure warning means exactly what it says - the drive has detected a condition that indicates that it could fail, and soon, and with no further warning.  Back it up now, while you still can, and get a new drive.

did you run chkdsk /r ,and it found no  disk bad spots ?

did you run seatools to also check your disk ?

i also have two barracudas in my pc ,so i went to the link you provided .

mine are not listed there . so i cant install the firmware .

seagate says it does not give info on what the firmware  fixes  ..

maybe some one who has installed the firmware will reply

i can not say what you should do or not do .

i can only say what i would do if i had the same problem  ::

at the cmmand prompt ,run as administrater ,type , chkdsk /f/r  ,enter ,

when prompted  y/n , type y ,enter , reboot , wait awile while it  checks  .

    when done ,login.

again at command prompt ,type sfc /scannow  , when done.

run seatools to check the hard drive ., when done .

backup everything ,make system image and repare disks .

make sure ,windows install disk and pc manufacturers recover disks

    are at hand.

or backup and clone the image to a good working used  or new hard drive .

then  i would do everything seagate says to do to the letter and install the firware .

that way no matter what happens i should still be able to use the pc..

that is if i did not make any mistakes while doing all that ...

SMART failure messages are very important.  I would buy a new drive and backup / copy your info on to it BEFORE attempting the firmware update.  SMART can affect the success / failure of the update.
