Wireless Optical Desktop v2.0 driver installation failure

I have been using a Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop v2.0 for two years without a hitch. This morning, neither keyboard nor mouse would respond. When I plugged the wireless receiver into a different USB port, I got the message that the driver failed to install. Also, ever since, Windows Update keeps nagging me about an update to "Microsoft - Other hardware - Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 700 v2.0", but when I try to install it, the installation fails with an error "WindowsUpdate_800F020B" "WindowsUpdate_dt000", which as I understand, says that a newer driver is installed already.

Anyone have any clue what to do here?

    Hello Monte,

I would suggest you to run Hardware and Devices troubleshooter to diagnose and fix the issue.

Refer to the link “Open the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter” to run the troubleshooter.

Refer to these links to know more about troubleshooting Wireless Keyboard and Mouse.

Troubleshoot response failures in wireless keyboard or mouse

Your wireless mouse or keyboard does not respond or you receive a “The wireless <device name> signal quality is low” error message

    Hello Monte,

    1.       Still do you have issues with installing the mouse?

    2.       Did you try the troubleshooting steps provided in my previous reply?

    Hi Sathish,

thanks for checking back. Yes, I did what you suggested, but the driver would reinstall only after several reboots. At least, the desktop set works again!

Now, whenever I replug the wireless receiver, I have to go through the same rigamarole all over. I marked your reply as the answer, but my text response appers to have gone the way of all things digital...

    Thanks again!

Thanks for the suggestion, but no, thanks, for two reasons:

    1. I am not going to pay $25 for fixing a $15 dektop set.
    2. I have tried a similar "solution" in the past, and it trashed my system. Thank God, I was able to revert to a recent Restore Point.

    Hello,

I suggest that you scan your computer with RadarSync so that you will know whether all the drivers are updated.

You can also use the same software to update them. Updating the drivers should fix this issue.

    David
