I want to install Microsoft Student with Encarta 2009.  However, it wants to uninstall my previous versions.  I hesitate only because I don't think you can download the updates for the previous versions anymore.

Does anyone know a work-around for this?  Is there a way to install the program from a line command and direct it not to uninstall previous versions.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Encarta appears to be a discontinued product, so there is not likely to be much more in 2009 than was in 2008.

You could install Encarta in a Virtual Machine if you don't want to uninstall 2008.

    Windows Virtual PC

    Download Windows XP Mode

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

Windows XP Mode (Windows 7 only, but not any of the Home versions)   "You are not eligible to download Windows XP Mode. You must have Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate to run Windows XP Mode".    If you have an old XP CD (or other older Windows CD)  available you can just download the Virtual Machine and skip the XP Mode download.

This covers the whole gambit of virtual machines in "Home" versions if you want to have a look at it.  Of course you will need a licensed copy of XP to install and  run in any of them (except XP Mode).

VirtualBox is an impressive VM contender

Thank you.  I decided to install it into XP Mode.  It works, but is slow in starting up.  Unfortunately, I can't download the updates to this program because they are no longer offered by Microsoft.  I thank you for your excellent advice!

Sometimes Virtual machines are a bit slow to load and run, perhaps if you have an actual XP CD you could run a Dual Boot system instead?

See METHOD TWO.  When Windows 7 is Installed First

How to Do a Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and XP

    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8057-dual-boot-installation-windows-7-xp.html

One known (minor) bug with dual booting XP with Vista or Windows 7, is the loss of System Restore points in the other operating systems after every XP boot.

Another thing that might be possible (I don't have Encarta to test with), is to take advantage of any Custom Install, and to choose a location to install into that is not the Default Programs Files folder.   It may be possible to install Encarta into a User's Documents folder without losing the other Encarta?
