Error message when I try to change any setting, or view quarantined files in Windows Defender : 0x80080015-"The activation requires a display name to be present under the CLSID key"

Original Title : error code 0x80080015

I updated Windows 7 to Windows 8.

I'm not sure if this happened right away, but now when I try to change any setting, or view quarantined files in Windows Defender, I get the  the error message:

"The activation requires a display name to be present under the CLSID key"

with error code 0x80080015.

There is no other explanation. Nothing for how to fix it.

Any ideas?

BTW: when is Microsoft going to start displaying error messages that the user can understand? the above is gibberish to 99% of the users.

Found this registry edit for Windows 8. Use at your own risk.

To turn off your UAC, Open your windows registry (regedit) and go there : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System , set the value "EnableLUA" to 0 , and restart your system.

Well I among the rest had this same problem.

(Used the ati driver uninstall tool)

But ran across this post which so far seems to have fixed the problem.

    http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=454&threadid=166190

This is the fix I used:

    • Try this for a fix.
      1. Run regedit.exe
      2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\MUI
      3. In this folder create a new key named StringCacheSettings
      4. Under this add a new DWORD (32-bit) named StringCacheGeneration
      5. Set the value of this new DWORD to 38b (hexdecimal)
      6. Close regedit and reboot windows.
I'm not sure it fixes every single thing broken by the AMD Uninstaller, but it solved the main issues for me. Your milage may vary .. source: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/failed-to-read-description-error-code-2

Now I have noticed that on my win 8 laptop the above line is in the registry but the Dword is different.

On laptop it is 5d while the above fix is 38b - note I used the 38b on desktop which seems so far to be fine ( I do not know what the difference is or what it does).

I did use the other reg hack to disable the LUA it let me access files again but still had problems like update, no apps, and as the post in fix link says services bonked.

So I re-enabled the LUA and did the other fix and atm all seems well.

    Hope this helps

I have this same issue! I originally installed Windows 8 and happen to run CCleaner while setting up the OS the way I wanted it and by reading other forums and doing research I figured CCleaner registry clean up was the issue. So I ending up re-installing Win8 again and now all of a sudden I am getting this issue again but CCleaner isn't even installed. I would really like to find a fix for this so I don't have to reinstall all over again...

I have also found another possible symptom of this issue. When trying to copy a file or folder, or when trying to create a folder (no option to create a file) anywhere in the root drive It tells me I have to provide administrator permission to complete the task but when I hit continue it looks the task completes but nothing actually happens.

Another issue I have found is that when uninstalling programs I get the error that the program may have already been uninstalled and asks if I would like to remove it. When clicking Yes, nothing happens.

Add me to this growing group of users with broken account controls. I did the sfc /scannow but it didnt really fix anything. Also I dont have CCleaner installed.
