How to set up a workgroup or homegroup using ethernet and wireless

I have 2 laptops, Windows 7 and Windows 8. The Windows 7 laptop connects to the internet via wireless. The Windows 8 laptop connects to the internet via Ethernet cable. Both work perfectly. They both use the same router and the same network. I cannot set up a workgroup or homegroup which includes both laptops. I have run all the troubleshooters. Both laptops are synchronised to Windows time. I have tried setting up the homegroup and workgroup on different laptops but the other laptop cannot see the connection.  I use the Ethernet cable as this laptop is in a room where the wireless signal can’t reach.

    Hi Martin,

It appears that you are unable to setup a home group.

Refer to the following links, they have detailed instructions on how to configure Home group and sharing files between different computers.

    HomeGroup from start to finish

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/homegroup-help#homegroup-start-to-finish=windows-8&v1h=win8tab1&v2h=win7tab1

    Sharing files and printers

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows/sharing-files-printers-help#sharing-files-and-printers=windows-8&v1h=win8tab2&v2h=win7tab1&v3h=winvistatab1&v4h=winxptab1

For Windows 7 operating system, you may refer to this link.

Hope the above information is useful.

    hello Mary,

    thank you for replying.

    • The Windows 7 laptop is in the same room as the router. The Windows 7 laptop connects the router wirelessly. There is no problem with the internet connection.
    • the Windows 8 laptop is in a room where there is no wireless connection. It connects to the router via Ethernet. The Ethernet cable runs from the Windows 8 laptop to a "Devolo" adapter which pugs into the electricity circuit. The Ethernet cable from the router connects to another "Devolo" adapter which is also plugged into the electric circuit. There is no problem with the internet connection.
    • Neither laptop can "see" the other whether in homegroup or network modes.

    I hope you can help.

    Thanks again

    Martin

    Hi Babu,

    Thanks for replying.

I have already done everything you suggested but without success. I just wonder if using Ethernet and wireless on the same network is not possible.

The ethernet cable need to be connected to the wireless router. What is it connected to if it can't connect to the wireless signal from the router? It should be right next to the router. You do not need to set up a workgroup. Windows 8 doesn't need to be in workgroups with the same name. Use the Network and Sharing Center to see if the network is set up correctly.

To set up a new homegroup, you need to leave the current home group on both computers first. Then set up a new homegroup on ONE of the computers and join that group using the generated password on the first one.

On the win 8 computer open pc settings, home group and change the sharing settings. They are usually off by default. Check the sharing settings on the win 7 computer.
