I've navigated to Device Manager, but without the mousepad, I can't get to Human Interface Devices to update the mousepad....any ideas??

Use your keyboard.  Tab and first letter navigation.  CursorRight to open a node.  The hard part IMO would be trying to find the right device in that collection.  I'm trying to find a way using wmic to help me identify things more easily.

FWIW my Synaptics is controlled via Mouse Properties instead.  That makes it easier to get at its device control.   Have you looked there instead?

Related to Mouse Properties (Pointer Options) press a Ctrl-key in case you have Mouse Sonar activated.   That way you could tell where the mouse pointer was even if you couldn't see it because it would be at the center of the Mouse Sonar circles.

Another possibility might be using a different mouse device.   Mousekeys for example.   Press and hold Alt+Shift+NumLock to activate Mousekeys.   Note that you need a keyboard with a Numeric keypad to use it.   Once it is active you would just use any number key but 5 or 0 to try to move the pointer and therefore hopefully expose it.

The problem may be that your Touchpad is emulating remote Touch screen features.  In that case having a real mouse to move and show the pointer would be a solution.   FWIW I can recommend an MS Arc Touch Mouse if you need one that is really portable.   (The "Arc" is a clever switch which conserves battery, makes flat storage, or is reasonably ergonomic when it is in use.)

    FYI

    Hi Chris,

What is the make and model of the Toshiba laptop?

Let's analyze and identify the cause of the issue. This issue normally occurs when there is driver conflicts with the devices.

Perform the steps provided and check.

    Method 1:

I would suggest you to run “Hardware and Devices” troubleshooter to diagnose the exact issue.

Follow these steps to run the troubleshooter:

    a.        Press “Windows key + W”.

    b.       Type “Troubleshooting” without quotes in the Search box and hit enter.

    c.        Select “Hardware and Sound” from the Troubleshooter Window.

    d.       Select “Hardware and Devices” under Devices option.

    e.       Follow the On Screen instructions.

    Method 2:

Let's unplug the battery and re-insert it.

    a.      Shut down the computer

    b.      Unplug the power cord from the laptop

    c.      Remove the battery

    d.      Press and hold the Power ON button for 50 seconds

    e.      Now insert the battery

    f.    ****Plug the power cord

    g.      Turn ON your laptop.

    Method 3:

Uninstall and reinstall touch pad drivers from the manufacturer’s website and see if that help.

Note: You may have to use an external mouse to perform these steps easily.

Step 1: Uninstall the drivers the touchpad drivers:

    Follow these steps:

    a. Press “Windows Key + W” from the keyboard.

    b. Type “Device Manager” without quotes in the search box and hit enter.

    c. Right click on the touchpad drivers and select “Uninstall”.

    d. Restart the computer once it is uninstalled.

Step 2: Download the latest touchpad drivers for “Windows 8” from manufacturer’s website.

Hope this information helps. Reply with the status so that we could help you further.

Thank you Robert for all your really helpful advice. I have looked though it and learned lots.

However I seem to have a different problem though the effect is the same: my mouse pointer has disappeared on a Toshiba L50b new computer. But by virtue of your amazing insight I can tell you that it is not a problem of drivers, I checked and was told that the drivers were up to date. I turned on mouse sonar and found that whether I used mouse keys or the touch pad the mouse wasn't moving. The really strange thing is that I have two accounts on my new machine - one admin and the other non admin and it is only on the non admin account that the mouse has disappeared. Actually it was first frozen and I turned everything off to try and repair that & I haven't seen the mouse on that account since.

Thank you for all your tips on using the computer without a mouse. It was very helpful.

I also tried turning my machine off and discovered that the battery in this model is not removable and there is no force shutdown switch that I can see.

PS I was looking around mouse properties and saw that the mouse was disabled! It was in Device Settings under Mouse properties! I hit return to enable it and it started working. Yet previously, of course, the driver settings had said that it was working properly - cause it was disabled!

    Blessings

    You would think a troubleshooter would have picked that up.   ; }

Thanks for sharing your resolution and thanks for your kind words.
