Windows 7 MTP Device will not install

Hi there,

I have a machine that will not recognise any MTP Devices (Cameras, Phones, etc) because when the MTP Device driver tries to install it fails and returns the error:

The dependency service or group failed to start.

I have tried all of the commonly suggested solutions to try and fix this problem - unplugging and removing all USB devices from device manager, removing upper and lower filters from sections of the registry, trying the fixit repair program, trying to repair windows updates, etc, but I fear my situation may be a little different

From looking at many solutions it seems that the MTP Device driver needs the "Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework" service to be running. I have tried to make this service automatic and manually start it but it returns error 1068: The dependency or group failed to start. The service is dependent on Plug and Play (which is started in my services) and User Mode Driver Frameworks Platform Driver. User Mode Driver Frameworks Platform Driver is not in my list of services. Is this normal? I think this is causing the problem but I have no idea how to correct it. It seems that it uses the file wudfpf.sys to run which is present in my system32 folder. However it is not running in my startup services (viewed in msconfig) or in my task manager.

One of my attempts to fix this meant I tried to install this update:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2685813/en-gb

But Windows tells me it is already installed. I wanted to uninstall it and re-install but it is not listed in my Installed Updates. It is in my Windows Update history though - twice! One says successful and the other says pending. As mentioned earlier, trying to repair Windows Update had no effect.

I would really appreciate any help or suggestions anyone can provide.

Cheers.

Kindly confirm the service Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework is present in the list of services. Also, make sure the service Plug and Play is also started and is running.

If you face any issue with the services, kindly follow the link:

Further to this - I just check my System Event Logs and the User Mode Driver Frameworks Platform Driver fails on startup. It gives this error:

The User Mode Driver Frameworks Platform Driver service failed to start due to the following error:

Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source.

    Thanks for your reply.

I have tried running the Windows Update Repair software, Microsoft Fixit, and used SFC /scannow. The problem persists.

Thanks for your help. Yes, Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Frameworkis in my list of services. However it will not start (giving the Error 1068). Plug and Play is started and running.

I followed your link but it seems to relate to different services and a different error? The services it mentions are running ok.

If you are using Windows 7, do you have User Mode Driver Frameworks Platform Driverin your list of services? Because I do not.

    Thanks.

User Mode Driver Frameworks Platform Driver is a component and not a service. You can double click on the service Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework, go to the dependencies tab and you can find User Mode Driver Frameworks Platform Driver. If you are facing any issues with the component, you can follow the link:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2685813

Install the update and then check.
