That's why I suggested installing the download (you don't need to purchase a product key) and try Windows 7 before you buy.
The image backup will allow you to re-install XP if Windows 7 isn't fully supported.

I have a Dell Dimension C521 desktop running Windows XP. Will Windows 8 run on this computer without having to do a lot of extra work or will
I have many problems with this upgrade? I have used Outlook express for my email and would like to keep that running if possible.

Thanks for the information - seems to be much to be considered.
There is a lot to be considered when Upgrading an Operating System.
That is why Microsoft also supplies this Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor that I put in my earlier reply.
Run the "Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor"
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20
As newer Operating System come out, the Hardware requirements to run them increase dramatically.' especially going from XP to Vista/Windows 7 (namely RAM and Graphics Hardware, just for starters)
Cheers.

I was afraid of something like that; so glad I asked.
Thanks for the info.
You are welcome.
Make sure you follow my Windows 7 Compatibility tests on your XP before doing anything with Windows 7.
Cheers.
There are NO Windows 7 Drivers available for your Dell Model Deskttop.
So be very careful about buying Windows 7.
Before you even "looked" at Windows 7, read and follow all of these instructions:
Go to your Computer / Laptop Manufacturer's website and see if Windows 7 Drivers are available for your Make and Model Computer / Laptop.
If not available, Windows 7 will not work correctly for you.
There are NONE available.
Run the "Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor"
