If you have resolved the problems that led you to renaming the folder and you do not mind the consequences of having done so.

The instructions I give to Windows Vista and above users for doing what you stated...

  1. Start an elevated command prompt.
  2. Run the following commands hitting enter after each line:

net stop wuauserv cd %systemroot% ren SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old net start wuauserv 3. Reboot 4. Try to install updates again

**Important** The following issues occur when you do this:

  • Updates that are currently downloaded but that have not yet been installed have to be downloaded again by using Windows Update or Microsoft Update.
  • When you delete the Software Distribution folder, your download history is removed.
  • If you currently receive updates from Microsoft Update and from Windows Update, you will have to re-select this option from the Windows Update Web site.

**Note** If the issue is resolved and you can successfully download and install updates, you can safely delete the SoftwareDistribution.old directory to recover disk space.

This person did not fix my problem, He just made the situation more confusing.

When I reconnected the reference number was ignored and I got a new person who took

control of my computer and fixed the problem in short order.

This interaction was most confusing and accomplished nothing except to make me more  frustrated.

My second call went perfectly and fixed the problem very quickly.  The only draw back was that the install turned out to be a clean install, which will take me several hours to rebuild.

I realize this is a year old thread, but I am having the same issue with Windows Update and error code 80246002. I just reinstalled Windows 7 SP1 Professional after a hard drive crash and Update successfully installed over 190 updates. When I ran System Update again, I got the annoying error code.

    1. I have run a windows update "fix it" program with no luck
    2. I have run the above steps with no luck.
    3. I ran the WIndows Update Trobuleshooter and the following occurs after 5-10 minutes::

    PROBLEMS FOUND:

    • Windows Update error 0x80070003(2014-08-27-T-06_233SP) NOT FIXED
    • Service registration is missing or corrupt   FIXED
    • Problems installing recent updates FIXED (this appears twice)

Any ideas? I am a bit unnerved that I can't apply any updates to my Windows 7 system.
