bttray.exe runs but no Bluetooth tray icon is visible

Sony VGN-SR520G laptop:

bttray.exe runs at startup or manually, but the blue Bluetooth tray icon never shows up - so I can't connect any Bluetooth devices.

I have downloaded and installed the Broadcomm Bluetooth driver (6.2.0.9600) and Bluetooth Enumeration Patch (2009101501) from Sony's support site, but it does not help.

I don't see any entries in the Device Manager that pertain to the Bluetooth.

Any suggestions?  Is my Bluetooth card just dead?

Thanks in advance,

-- Lee

    Lee,

Check if the Bluetooth icon is removed from the system tray or has been disabled in the notification area.

    1. Click “Start” button, and then select “Devices and Printers”.
    2. Right-click the device icon of your computer name and select “Bluetooth Device”.
    3. In “Bluetooth Settings” window, check “Show the Bluetooth icon in the notification area”, and then click “OK”.

Also check if the Bluetooth icon is hidden in notification area. See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows7/change-how-icons-appear-in-the-notification-area

If the Bluetooth icon is still not found in the notification area, please reinstall Bluetooth driver for a try.

    Hi Lee,

I see that this is your first post in this forum, welcome to the Microsoft Community forum.

Did this issue start recently? Do you remember making any recent changes to the computer prior to this issue?

This issue could be caused due to some incorrect settings or due to some corrupt system files or due to s software conflict. I would suggest you to try these steps and check:

Method 1: Hardware and devices troubleshooter

I would suggest you to run the built-in Hardware and Devices troubleshooter that can detect and fix most of the incorrect settings and errors that could cause such issues. Refer to this article for more information:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-in/windows7/open-the-hardware-and-devices-troubleshooter

    Method 2:

If the troubleshooter couldn’t fix the issue, I would suggest you to check the settings for Bluetooth services:

    a) Click on the start button and click on “Run”, type “services.msc”.

    b) Locate “Blue tooth support service” and check if the status is displayed as running.

    c) If it is not running, right click on the service and select start.

    d) Right click on the service again and select properties, in the general tab, select the start up type to “Automatic”.

    Method 3:

If the issue still persists, then I would suggest you to re-install the Bluetooth driver and check. You can refer to these steps:

    a) Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, and then, under System, clicking Device Manager.

    b) Locate your Bluetooth device and right click on it.

    c) In the driver tab, click on Uninstall driver.

    d) Now reboot the computer and Windows will try to boot the basic driver.

    e) If the device doesn’t work with the basic driver, then I would suggest you to install the driver you downloaded from the manufacturer’s website and check.

Try these steps and let us know the results; we’d be happy to help if you need any further assistance.

    Lee,

Try installing the latest chipset drivers from the Sony website and then check if the Bluetooth hardware is detected.

    http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=VGNSR520GH&template_id=1&region_id=1&tab=download#/downloadTab

If it doesn't, then it could be a hardware problem. You may have to contact Sony and replace the hardware.

"Show the Bluetooth icon in the notification area” was already checked.

Bluetooth is not listed anywhere in the Notification Icons Area list.

As I stated in my first post,

I have downloaded and installed the Broadcomm Bluetooth driver (6.2.0.9600) and Bluetooth Enumeration Patch (2009101501) from Sony's support site, but it does not help.

    Any other suggestions?

I'll have another Bluetooth module in a couple days.  I'll let you know if that was the issue.

    Thanks,

    Thank you for your reply.

No, I don't think any correlation can be made to any recent changes.  I honestly don't know how long it's been since I last successfully used the Bluetooth on this laptop.

    Method 1 yields no results.

Method 2: the Bluetooth Service and Bluetooth Support Service have been set to Automatic start and have been in a Started Status.

Method 3: I can't find any Bluetooth entries in the Device Manager.

Again, BTTray.exe (Bluetooth Tray Application) runs at startup or manually (and shows up in the Task Manager Processes list), but the blue Bluetooth tray icon never shows up - so I can't connect any Bluetooth devices.

    Any other ideas?

I wonder if my Bluetooth card is dead.

    Thank you,

    -- Lee
